BECKY BREWERTON GETS CATEGORY 20 STATUS FROM LPGA
By Beth Ann Baldry
The LPGA have handed out last-minute "gifts" earlier to players who came up short at the recent Final Qualifying School.
Welsh Solheim Cup and past Curtis Cup player Becky Brewerton, pictured from LET website, is one of nine
additional players who have received Category 20 status. The full list is:
Ayaka Kaneko, Meredith Duncan, Tanya Dergal, Becky Brewerton, Jennifer Johnson, Junko Nakada, Jaclyn Sweeney, Lisa Ferrero and Sarah Brown.“After we reviewed the results from the qualifying school, it was apparent that we could create a few more opportunities for players in Category 20 than we had originally accounted for,” said LPGA director of media relations, Heather Daly-Donofrio.
While players with Category 20 status aren’t likely to get into many events off the Priority List, they are eligible to Monday qualify or play through sponsor exemptions. Once these players gain entry into an event, the money they earn will allow them to improve their status on the Priority List after the re-shuffle.
Daly-Donofrio said the tour simply is looking for more ways to give players an opportunity to play for official money.
The 2011 LPGA schedule has yet to be released, but is expected to have fewer domestic events with the loss of CVS in Danville, California, and the one-year hiatus of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
