By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Kelsey Macdonald (Stirling University and Nairn Dunbar GC) has finished third in the Argentina women's open championship at Club Campos de Golf Las Praderas de Lujan, about 70 miles west of Buenos Aires.
Kelsey, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and Clemence Abrahamian frm Marseille Univeresity, France were playing as representatives of the RandA's Bursar Students.
Kelsey had rounds of 74 (33-41), 74 (36-38) and 72 (35-37) for a one-over-par total of 220 over the par-73 lay-out.
Winner with a five-under-par total of 214 was Argentina native Victoria Tanco, who is a student at the IMG Leadbetter Academy at Bradenton, Florida and has chalked up a series of wins in American junior tournaments.
Victoria trailed Kelsey by four shots after a first-round 78 but then smashed the course record with a second-round 65 (31-34) and finished off with a 71.
She won by four shots from another Argentina player, Manuela Carbajo Re who scored 70-77-71 for 218, two shots ahead of third-placed Kelsey.
Clemence Abrahamian finished joint 12th on 234 with scores of 78, 76 and 80.
Kelsey's mother June told "Kirkwoodgolf":
"She has really enjoyed the tournament, plenty of birdies. They have stayed with host familes and been very well looked after. Having got over the "not being picked for the Curtis Cup match" feelings, Kelsey is enjoying her golf tremendously, although she's been very busy at University, and had hardly played since the last time she was in Argentina, for the world team championship in October."
Not including team events, Kelsey has played 69 counting rounds in the 2010 European Golf Association women's amateur rankings system in which she is currently ranked No 9.
The leading dozen are:
1 Leona Maguire (Ireland), 2 Marta Silva (Spain), 3 Lisa Maguire (Ireland), 4 Alexandra Bonetti (France), 5 Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), 6 Therese Koelback (Denmark), 7 Letitia Beck (Israel), 8 Sophia Popov (Germany), 9 Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling University), 10 Camilla Lennarth (Sweden).
11 Carlota Ciganda (Spain), 12 Hayley Davis (England).
Her next trip will be to Florida on January 3 as a member of the Stirling University squad who will be playing on the Orange Blossom women's amateur tour in Florida.
