WEST OF SCOTLAND TITLE BOOST FOR
-
FIVE-STROKE WINNER MEGAN BRIGGS

Kilmacolm's Megan Briggs gave herself a big confidence boost ahead of the defence of her Scottish women's amateur title from May 18 to 22 when she won the West of Scotland women's amateur title in style at Cardross Golf Club today.
Megan had rounds of 72 and 76 for an aggregate of 148 - one lower than the combined CSS (75-74) - to by a comfortable margin of five shots from Sara Bishop (Windyhill).
Sara was only one shot off the pace after 18 holes but slipped back with an afternoon 80.
County captain Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), beaten in the final of the Lanarkshire women's championship last week, finished a creditable third on 156, with a pair of 78s.

Loretto pupil Julie Yang (only 14!) wins
Welsh open stroke-play title after play-off

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Julie Yang, a 14-year-old South Korean girl and a pupil at Loretto School's Golf Academy, Musselburgh, was the surprise winner of the Welsh women's open amateur 54-hole stroke-play championship at Southerndown Golf Club's links course in South Wales today.
Julie, who led by four strokes with 18 holes to go, won a play-off at the 19th hole against England 18-year-old international Nikki Foster (Pleasington, Blackburn) who was runner-up to Danielle McVeigh in last weekend's "Helen Holm."
They had tied on six-under-par 216 after three rounds at Southerndown.
Foster had fought her way into contention with a superb, five-under-par round of 69 over the classic Welsh links. The Lancashire lass
birdied five of the last six holes to get into the play-off, both finishing with 54-hole aggregates of 216 – six under par.
Yang, who slipped to a 77 in her final round, won at the first extra hole.
Third on 218 came Llandudno youngster Amy Boulden named as a reserve for the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team to face the Americans next month and Dunfermline's Louise Kenney, who led or shared the lead in the recent "Helen Holm" tournament at Troon until the closing holes, finished a creditable fourth.
On the first play-off hole, the chargining Nikki Foster ran out of luck just when she needed it most. She saw her second shot land on the bank just short of the green and roll down the slope away from the hole. Julie responded with a confident iron to the heeart of the green and had no difficulty in securing her par 4 and a memorable victory.
So who is Julie Yang? If she remains in this country, the 14 going on 15 year old may be about to make quite an impact on open tournaments.
Of South Korean extraction, Julie was based at Phoenix when she became the youngest ever winner of an American Junior Golf Association tournament in August 2007 - when she was only 12 years, 1 month and 8 days old!
In fact, in 2004, her CV credits her with winning the World Junior Masters in 2004. That would make her only eight years of age, so it must have been a Wee Wonders type of event.
If, like me, you might ask: "Why didn't Julie play in the Scottish Under-16 girls' open championship in early April because she enrolled at Loretto last September?" The answer to that one, very kindly supplied to me by Lesley Atkins' mother, is that Julie was in Thailand at that time.
The next question is: "Why didn't Miss Yang play in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur championship at Troon last weekend?"
Again, Mrs Atkins provides me with the answer: " Julie couldn't play at Troon because she was down at Oulton Hall, near Leeds helping Loretto finished second to Millfield in the Grand Finals of the Independent Schools Golf Assocation championship on April 25 and 26."
So, now you know more than most people about Julie Yang the 14-year-old who is the new Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play champion. If she doesn't go home - wherever home is - for the summer mnths, Julie could make quite an impact on the European women's amateur golf scene. She is among the entries for next month's British women's open amateur championship at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire.
Could Julie play for Scotland during her time at Loretto? Short answer: No. She would have to live in the country for 10 years to qualify on residential grounds.

Deborah, who finished six shots clear of the field, leads 10 qualifiers for the Grand Medal Final which will take place at The Worcestershire Golf Club on June 26.
“I’m looking forward to that very much,” said Deborah, who is a member at Wrekin. She returned to golf last summer after an absence of 20 years when she devoted herself to her two children.
She came back last June with a handicap of 26 and by the time she teed up at Brocton Hall she had reduced to 19. Now, a further cut is on the way which will help her pursue her current goal:
“Last December I set myself the target of getting down to 15 by the end of May.”
Deborah is enjoying her second-time-round at golf.
“Now I’ve come back I don’t let myself get irritated or upset by silly little shots. I just enjoy the game of golf.”
Her caddy at the regional medal final was her father, Paul Austin, who originally introduced her to golf. She had two gross birdies and four pars during her round and scored 14-over gross 84. “I’ve had a marvellous day, everyone at Brocton Hall was so welcoming and the competition was very well organised by EWGA,” said Deborah.
This was the first of six regional medal finals which are contested by players who each returned the four best medal scores at their club during 2009.

Sammy's grandstand finish

-
wins Aberdeenshire title

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Westhill teenager Sammy Leslie staged a grandstand finish to win the Aberdeenshire women's county golf championship for the first time at Portlethen Golf Club today.
Never in the lead, Sammy was two down on the 16th tee in the final against Donna Pocock (Murcar Links), the No 1 seed and the 2008 champion.
Then the 18-year-old Leslie suddenly produced the form that had toppled the defending champion, Sara Mathieson (Royal Musselburgh), by 6 and 5 in the morning semi-finals, thus avenging defeat by Sara in last year's final.
Leslie, the No 3 qualifier, won the 17th with a par 4 and the 18th with a bogey 6 to be all square for the fourth time in the match. The difference was that this time Sammy went on to lead for the first time at the first extra hole.
Donna conceded the match and the title to her younger opponent when she had failed to get down in two from the edge of the green with Leslie, having played a great approach shot to within 2 1/2ft of the flagstick.
Today's results:
SEMI-FINALS
Donna Pocock (Murcar Links) bt Linda Carnie (Newburgh on Ythan) 3 and 1.
Sammy Leslie (Westhill) bt Sara Mathieson (Royal Musselburgh) 6 and 5.
FINAL
Leslie bt Pocock at 19th.

SAMMY ABERDEENSHIRE'S BEST - BAR NONE!

New Aberdeenshire champion Sammy Leslie worked behind the bar at Westhill Golf Club until late on Saturday night - "I need the money!" she said - but she still played tremendous golf to score upset wins in the semi-finals and again in the final on Sunday.
"I played badly in the Helen Holm tournament at Troon last weekend but my game's been getting better all week," said Leslie.
"Even when I was two down on the 16th tee, I never really thought about losing. I just concentrated on winning the 17th and when I did, I focused on winning the 18th."
Aberdeenshire county captain Ellie Whyte said: "Sammy Leslie came of age in this championship, and particularly on the last day. I've watched her making progress from being a little girl competitor in the Aberdeenshire girls' competition."
