Loretto's Julie Yang (14) lying joint fourth

Hannah Burke leads Irish stroke-play by three shots

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
England’s Hannah Burke added a 72 to her opening 71 to lead the the 54-hole Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship into Sunday's final 18 holes at Newlands Golf Club, Dublin.
Burke, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, from Hertfordshire and a US college circuit player as a student at Baylor University, Texas, leads in-form Australian Stacey Keating and England compatriot Nikki Foster (Pleasington) by three strokes after Foster fired a best of the afternoon 71.
Keating, the title-winner in 2007 and beaten in a three-way play-off for the St Rule Trophy over the Old Course, St Andrews last Sunday evening, shared the first-round lead but slumped to a 75 to drop back into a tie for second place with Foster who lost the Welsh women's open amateur title play-off against 14-year-old South Korean Julie Yang, a pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh, and finished second in the "Helen Holm" at Troon at the end of April.
Repeating Welsh champion Tara Davies (Holyhead) and Julie Yang lie one shot further back while Justine Lee (Australia) and Germany's Leigh Whittaker are tied on two over par.
Sinead O’Sullivan (Galway) leads the Irish challenge after rounds of 77 and 76 while Deirdre Smith (Co. Louth) added a disappointing 79 to her opening 74 to join O’Sullivan on 153.
In the team event, Australia, winners of the team title at the St Rule Trophy tournament, lead Wales by four strokes while England are next best, one shot further back.
The top forty players who survived today’s 36 hole cut commence their final round at 8.30am on Sunday with the leaders teeing off at 11am.
Spectators are welcome to come along to what surely must be Hannah Burke’s finest hour, having lost last year’s championship after a marathon seven-hole play-off against Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell).

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Flo Parker gets her nose in front in the Netherlands
-
FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England’s Florentyna Parker takes a two-shot lead into the final round of the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in the Netherlands after shooting a career best six under par 66 in the second round today.
The 20-year-old club professional's daughter, who was born in Germany to English parents, shot into the lead at seven under par with six birdies in the blazing sunshine at Golfclub Broekpolder in Rotterdam.
The second year tour player - she turned professional after the 2008 Curtis Cup match over the Old Course, St Andrews - played the back nine in four under 32 and then picked up a further two birdies coming home to finish two clear of compatriot Laura Davies and 2005 champion Virginie Lagoutte-Clement of France.
Parker, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who is a member of Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Lancashire, said that the secret was hitting the ball straight on the tricky tree-lined course.
“I played very consistent: I hit the fairways, hit the greens and made important putts. I played really solid,” she said. “Yesterday after my first few holes I thought ‘I’m not going to get through the round’, I played so badly; but I recovered well and the last six holes yesterday I shot three under and I continued with that today.”
The Hamburg-born player is ideally placed to earn her first victory as a professional, leading a Ladies European Tour event for the first time.
Last year, as a rookie, her best finish was a tie for second at the AIB Ladies Irish Open and this year she tied for 6th at both the Lalla Meryem Cup and the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. Despite her tender years, Parker has years of experience as an amateur, having first played on the LET aged 13 as a member of the Faldo Series.
“I played two events when I was 13 - Portugal and Ireland - and those were my best finishes last year on Tour so it was quite funny,” said Parker, who turns 21 later this month.
Parker is from a golfing family. Her father, Tim Parker, is her coach and her brother, Ben Parker is a professional tour player. Her mother, Gina, is a non-golfer but caddies regularly while this week it is her cousin Ella’s turn.
“I never have good golfers on my bag and I think it works. I’m calm and relaxed and we talk a lot between shots. I think that’s the best way and when it’s my time to play I concentrate on that shot,” Parker said, adding that Ella will receive a large bonus if she wins the €37,500 first prize.
Davies admitted her score would have been better if she had continued the way the started the round – with four birdies over the first six holes. She took two bogeys on the back nine, but was satisfied nonetheless.
She said: “I played very well but on the back nine I didn’t get it close enough to take advantage. I had a bogey on 17 and was back to five and I three putted the last, which was a shame. I played pretty solid overall, hit a lot of fairways and greens and drove it nicely.”
Another Englishwoman, Rebecca Hudson (69) shared fourth place with Italian Sophie Sandolo (71) on four under par. Scotland’s Krystle Caithness (70) and England’s Trish Johnson (71) were a shot back at three under.
Australian Karen Lunn aced the 198-yard par-three ninth hole, which was the fourth hole in one on Tour this year.
The eight-time Ladies European Tour winner earned a spectacular Omega Constellation watch, worth approximately €6,000 and said: “It was a perfect yardage for a six iron. I hit a really nice shot, a little draw, it landed a touch right of the pin, took a perfect bounce and I didn’t actually see it go in the hole because the pin was in the shade but obviously the reaction of the gallery told us it went in, so it was exciting.”
Lunn shot a second round of four under 68 and moved to two under par for the tournament, in a tie for eighth with seven other players: Melodie Bourdy (72), Camille Fallay (72), Lydia Hall (71), Linda Wessberg (68), Malene Jorgensen (67), Lynn Kenny (71) and Ashleigh Simon (70).
First-round leader Hazel Kavanagh went back from an opening 68 to a 75 for 143.
Carly Booth, a team-mate of leader Florentyna Parker in the 2008 GBandI Curtis Cup team, missed her first cut in her rookie year as a pro. She also had her highest one-round score as a professional - second-round 85 for a total of 159, 11 shots more than the limit mark for qualifying to play in Sunday's final round.

Keating and Burke lead Irish stroke-play with 71s

Australian Stacey Keating, beaten in a play-off for the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews last Sunday evening, continued her good run of form to fire a two under par 71 to share the lead with England's Hannah Burke after the first round of the Irish women's open amateur strokeplay championship over 54 holes at Newlands Golf Club, Dublin this weekend.
Keating, touring Europe this summer with the players who won the team event for Australia at the St Rule Trophy, and Burke, just home from Baylor University, Texas, lead by one stroke from St Andrews University student and Welsh international Gemma Bradbury and Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin who both signed for 72.
Deirdre Smith (Co. Louth) leads the Irish challenge on 74 with Gillian O'Leary (Cork) one shot further back.

Jodi Ewart shares lead on pro debut on Futures Tour

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE US DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. Jodi Ewart of North Yorkshire, England and Chelsea Curtis of New Seabury, Massachusetts, carded four-under-par 68s to share a one-shot lead during the opening round of the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ewart, pictured, a recent University of New Mexico graduate, is making her professional debut at the $110,000 tournament, held at Hunters Ridge Golf Course. Ewart started her day off steady with five pars after a 40-minute weather delay at the start of the tournament. Following a birdie on six, and par on seven, Ewart hit four birdies beginning on eight, and carded only one bogey on 14.
"I was a lot less nervous than I thought I was going to be," said Ewart, who recorded four wins in collegiate competition. "It's a lot different from college, a lot less pressure. In college you have to play for a team, but today I just went out and played for myself. I just played golf."
Curtis said she had been struggling a bit with her long game the past few tournaments and felt today that extra practice in recent weeks had paid off.
"I finally hit the ball well today," admits Curtis, a Georgetown University alumna who carded a bogey-free round. "I wanted to hit as many greens today as I could. I hit 12 today, which is a big improvement from previous weeks. I've been putting well this season, so I knew if I could just hit greens, my putting would take care of the rest."
Sharing a three-way tie for third at 3-under-par 69 are Hannah Jun of San Diego, Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., and Bree Arthur of Brisbane, Australia.
Former LPGA Tour member Jun felt she got off to a slow start this morning following a bogey on her first hole but quickly made up for it with five birdies.
"The front nine is the part of the course I feel is the most scoreable," said Jun, who was named the 2003 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year while at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). "I figured once I bogeyed the first hole, a par-5, I might as well go for everything."
Lawton, Oklahoma's Lucy Nunn finished at 2-under-par 70 and is tied for sixth along with Sophia Sheridan of Guadalajara, Mexico and Michaela Cavener of Ponce City, Okla.
"I was really consistent all day," said Nunn, who tied for seventh at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship while at the University of Arkansas. "I was 3-under but then doubled 13. I just wanted to get a couple more coming down the stretch and was able to birdie 17. I had a really good opportunity on 18 that I didn't make. I was right there all day."
Saturday's second round of the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge, presented by KCRG and The Gazette, will begin at 6:50 a.m. CDT, off the first and tenth tees, with the afternoon tee times starting at 11:30 a.m. The leaders will tee off at 1:30 p.m.
Weather: Partly cloudy with increasing winds. Temperatures rising towards the mid 80s. Winds WSW at 15 to 20 mph.
