Jodi Ewart ties for fifth place in pro debut on Futures Tour

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, June 6, 2010 - Second-year Duramed Futures Tour professional Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., claimed her first professional title Sunday at the $110,000 Ladies Titan Tire Challenge, presented by KCRG and The Gazette. Song (67) finished the tournament at 11-under-par (205).
"I had a slow start this morning," said Song, who earned her LPGA card following the 2009 Duramed FUTURES Tour season. "I didn't make any birdies until nine. On 10, I just wanted to get it close and it pulled in. That was a huge momentum boast."
Even with the new momentum, Song wasn't aware she was in position to win until she saw the leaderboard from the 17th tee.
"I knew I had to stay calm but I started thinking too much," admitted Song. "Seventeen is a tough hole and I didn't want to hit it into the hazard."
Not only did Song miss the hazard but she went on to birdie 17 and 18, which she hit from 35 yards, and jumped for joy as the crowd cheered.
"I wasn't expecting it to go in, so I got really excited," said Song.
With her first professional win now out of the way, Song is focused on the next few weeks.
"It feels really good," said the teenager, who turns 19 on June 14. "I'm excited for the next few weeks. Hopefully I can win next week as a birthday present to myself."
Whitney Wade (68) of Glasgow, Kentucky, stayed pretty consistent throughout the tournament but more than made up for it at the end with an eagle on 18.
"I definitely finished well," said Wade, who advanced from tied for 19 to a tie for second. "I wanted to climb. I missed a nine-foot putt on 18 yesterday so I just wanted to come out here today and get some confidence going."
Wade shared the tie for second with Mo Martin (69) of Altadena, Calif., and Hannah Jun of San Diego (72) at 5-under-par (211).
England's Jodi Ewart (75), making her pro debut, came into today's final round tied for first with Song. However after a tough back nine she slipped to a tie for fifth at 3-under-par (213). Ewart was joined by Tiffany Joh (69) of San Diego, Nicole Smith (70) of Riverside, Calif., Ryann O'Toole (72) of San Clemente, Calif., and Pornanong Phatlum (72) of Chaiyaphum, Thailand.
"I played very similar to yesterday on the front nine," said Ewart, who was making her professional debut. "I wasn't nervous but I just made terrible shots on the back nine. I couldn’t get anything to drop all day. I was very disappointed that I bogeyed the last three holes, but overall it's good."
The next stop for the Duramed FUTURES Tour will be the Teva Championship in Mason, Ohio, June 11-13.
Weather: Mostly sunny with increasing winds with temperatures in the upper 70s. Winds NW at 15 to 20 mph.

Hannah Burke wins Irish women's open title this time

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
England’s Hannah Burke, beaten in a seven-hole marathon play-off in last year's event, added a final round 71 to win the 2010 Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play by five strokes from Australia’s Justine Lee at Newlands Golf Club, Dublin, 6 June 2010.
Burke, who started the day three strokes ahead of the field, raced to two under par through the sixth hole in the teeming Irish rain. So heavy were the showers that play was suspended on two separate occasions while greenkeepers worked tirelessly to clear the flooding greens. Burke went on to turn four strokes ahead of the field and never looked like being caught after birdies on 15, 17 and 18. A thrilled Burke was delighted with her first Irish Stroke Play, particularly having lost last year’s play off at the seventh tie hole to Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell).
Tara Davies (WAL) was two shots behind Lee in third place while Australia’s Ashley Ona finished fourth ahead of rising superstar Julie Yang (South Korea), a 14-year-old pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh and winner of the Welsh equivalent of the Irish title early last month..
Irish Champion Mary Dowling (New Ross) added a 78 to her overnight total to finish best of the Irish, one shot ahead of Paula Grant (Lisburn) and C. Louth’s Deirdre Smith.

Hannah Burke has Futures Tour bid line-up up at end of  year

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England international Hannah Burke  has won the 2010 Irish women’s open strokeplay championship by five strokes – a year after she lost a marathon play-off for the title on the seventh extra hole.

“It’s awesome,” said Hannah, from Mid-Herts, who had a final round 71 at Newlands, Dublin, to finish on five-under par for the 54-hole event – and five shots clear of Australia’s Justine Lee.
“I think I’ve been due a win for a while. I finished second here last year, then I was second in the English strokeplay and I’ve spent my last year at Baylor University, Texas, and finished second a couple of times there. Now I’ve managed to win!”
The 22-year-old held or shared the lead throughout the tournament and started the final round three shots clear of the field.
She was two-under for the first six holes of the third round, despite the teeming Irish rain which delayed her tee-off time by 90 minutes. So heavy were the showers that play was suspended on two separate occasions while greenkeepers worked tirelessly to clear the flooding greens.
Hannah got to the turn four strokes ahead of the field and was never going to be caught after she birdied 15, 17 and 18.
“I played extremely well in the conditions today,” said Hannah. “It rained the whole day, apart from the last 45 minutes, and we had a couple of stops while they squeegeed the greens. We had about a six or seven hour round, on and off the golf course. But it was a great experience for me – it was brilliant.”
Hannah will play a full summer of English and British events before returning to Baylor to complete her degree. Then, later in the year, she’s hoping to win her place on the US Duramed Futures Tour.

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Hole in one helps Krystle finished 2nd to Florentyna
FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England’s Florentyna Parker earned her first Ladies European Tour victory at the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in Holland today

The German-born 20-year-old, who celebrates her 21st birthday in exactly two weeks’ time, carded a final round of two under par 70 at Golfclub Broekpolder in Rotterdam on Sunday for a two stroke win over Scotland’s Krystle Caithness (68). Parker and Caithness were team-mates for Great Britain and Ireland in the 2008 Curtis Cup match over the Old Course, St Andrews.
Parker led by two strokes after a personal best of 66 on Saturday and held onto her lead until the very end, playing through heavy rain in the afternoon.
The second year tour player played the front nine in level par 36 and then picked up two birdies coming home to finish at nine under par in total.
“I can’t believe it. I didn’t expect to win; it just means so much to me,” a teary Parker said.
After a shaky start, with a three-putt bogey at the first, Parker steadied her nerves with a birdie at the par-five third hole. She dropped another shot at the fifth after finding the trees off the tee, but picked up another birdie on the sixth, a par five.
She moved to eight under par and re-established a two stroke lead with a birdie at the 11th hole before finishing in style with a two-putt birdie at the par-five last, to great applause in front of a packed gallery and clubhouse.
“I started off with a bogey and I usually start off with bogeys so it wasn’t anything new to me. I just wanted to get settled down at first and I play very consistent and made a few birdies,” said Parker, who had her non-golfing younger cousin Ella on the bag for the week.
Ella is one of the few non-golfers in the family, since her father, Tim, is her coach and a teaching professional, as are her two uncles. Her brother, Ben, played on the Challenge Tour before he became injured and 'Flory' has been playing golf since the age of five.

"I knew I wanted to be a professional golfer, probably when I was 13, when I played my first two events on the Ladies European Tour. I really enjoyed it then and I knew what I wanted to be,” she said.
Despite having finished second at the AIB Ladies Irish Open in her rookie season in 2009, her goal for 2010 was to be more consistent and earn more top ten finishes. She wasn’t expecting to win.
“I’m glad I’m now in the Evian Masters and the Ricoh Women’s British Open, which is being played on my home course, Royal Birkdale. I’ve fulfilled my goals for this year and I hope I keep playing well.”
With her win, Parker earned €37,500 and moved up 12 places to fourth on the LET’s Henderson Money List. She also won an Omega watch.
For 21-year-old Caithness, from Cupar near St Andrews, runner-up spot was her career best finish and her score was helped by a hole in one at the fourth, which was her first ace in competition. She used a seven-iron on the 179-yard hole.
“My hole in one obviously helped my score. It took me from three to five under par, so that’s always nice,” said the second year Tour pro. “It’s my best finish. I played well and putted well. I’m happy with second and it kind of spurs me on for wanting the first; we’re almost there!”
A stroke back, South African Ashleigh Simon (69) shared third place with 2005 champion Virginie Lagoutte-Clement of France (71) with Italian Sophie Sandolo in fifth place on five under and Frenchwoman Anne-Lise Caudal in sixth.
South Korean LET rookie Jeehae Lee shot a women's professional course record of seven under 65 with five birdies and a tap-in eagle at the par five third, for her best ever score. She finished in a tie for seventh at three under par in total with Laura Davies, Maria Hernandez, Mollie Fankhauser, Georgina Simpson and Beth Allen.

Jodi Ewart still sharing lead and Gemma Webster gets a hole in one

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE US DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. Dark clouds hovered all day at the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but the forecasted rain managed to hold off until the end as Jodi Ewart and Christine Song share a one-stroke lead. Ewart and Song are 6-under-par (138) following second-round play at the $110,000 tournament, held at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
Ewart, from North Yorkshire, England, came into today's round as co-leader and kept her momentum going despite carding two bogeys.
"I started off pretty similar to yesterday," said Ewart, who is making her professional debut. "My tee shots were a bit wild but hopefully I can get that sorted on the range tomorrow. I had 29 putts, and 28 yesterday, so I'm on point on that. If I can keep it steady, I'm in a good place."
California's Song felt her strong showing in last year's Ladies Titan Tire Challenge gave her the confidence to perform well. Song carded five birdies and two bogeys in her round.
"I like the course a lot," said Song, who is a current member of the LPGA Tour. "I feel like I can win in Iowa. My plan for tomorrow is easy, more birdies and no bogeys."
Finishing tied for third at 5-under-par (139) are Michaela Cavener of Ponca City, Okla., and Hannah Jun of San Diego, Calif. Jun bogeyed the first hole for the second day, but due to her strong finish on Friday, she knew she would be able to bounce back.
"I've been having a weird time with the first one," said Jun. "But I figured there are a lot of birdies out there. I'm happy where I'm at. I want to post a good score tomorrow."
With a score of 4-under-par (140), Lili Alvarez of Durango, Mexico, shares Jun's attitude going into Sunday's final round.
"My game plan for tomorrow is to do the same as I did today," said Alvarez, who is a cast member on the upcoming Golf Channel program, Big Break: Sandals Resort. "I'd like to see my name on the leaderboard, hopefully on top."
Seventy-two players made the 36-hole cut at 149 (+5).
Thirty players currently stand at even-par 144 or better after two rounds.

Gemma Webster Scores Hole-In-One
Second-year professional Gemma Webster, pictured,  of Glasgow scored her fifth hole-in-one during Saturday's second-round play at the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The 2005 British Universities Stroke Play Champion used a 4-iron on the 189-yard par-three 16th hole to make the ace.
"No one could really see the ball for a while and we wondered if it went in," recalled Webster. "We wondered if it went in but know one really knew. So I walked up to the hole and there it was, a hole-in-one."
This was Webster's first hole-in-one as a professional. Watch the video of Webster talking about her hole-in-one at YouTube.com/ROAD2LPGA.

Spent Saturday day in Boston, going to the Italian “North End” for lunch and then we went round town and onto the Charles River on a “duck”. Out for tea in Quincy Market and then had a wee ride in the rickshaws.
