They were clear winners of the week with five points from five matches and will represent the region in the finals of the English Counties’ Championship, supported by Virgin Atlantic.

Vikki Laing in contention at Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open

 - I'd forgotten how much fun it was

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Aussie Kristie Smith leads by one stroke at the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open after an opening round of seven under par 65 in fine conditions at Golf Gerre Losone.
The 21-year-old West Australian said that a red hot putter helped her to establish her lead ahead of England’s Georgina Simpson and Vikki Laing (pictured right) of Scotland.
The second year professional, playing her first season on the LET, carded eight birdies and just one bogey on a drenched course, which later dried out in the sunshine.
“I had 26 putts and that’s always nice to have on the statistics,” Smith said. “I drove it pretty average but holed some putts, which was where the 65 came from.
“I felt really comfortable, even after the yippy start I had on the 11th hole. I feel really comfortable on this golf course. It suits my eye and I’ve been here since Friday so I’ve had a really good warm up.”
Starting at the 10th, Smith missed a short birdie putt at the 11th hole but a birdie barrage followed. She birdied four holes in a row from the 12th hole and picked up two more shots at the par four 17th and par five 18th holes.
At six under after nine holes, she added further birdies at the first and sixth to reach eight under, before dropping her only shot at the par-3 seventh, just missing her second putt.
Smith, a runner-up in Slovakia three weeks ago, was joined on the fairways by her father, famed professional golfer Wayne, who was in Europe on business.
“It’s nice to have him here because I’ve been struggling a bit with my swing so it’s nice to get a check up,” said Smith, whose said that her first sporting memories are of spending time in the crèches at golf tournaments where Wayne was playing.
After winning two events already in 2010, at the Royal Canberra Ladies Classic on the ALPG in Australia and the Daytona Beach Invitational on the Duramed Futures Tour, Smith is in pursuit of her first victory on the Ladies European Tour and she says that work with her coach Ian Triggs is starting to pay off.
“I’ve been putting a whole lot better this year and that’s probably why I’ve been playing so well. My chipping has improved out of sight. I’ve been working really hard on that so definitely the short game has had a bit of improvement,” said the former Australian Amateur Champion.
When asked her ambitions for the tournament, she said: “A win here would be absolutely perfect.”
Simpson, who started at the first hole, began in similar fashion with four birdies in a row from the second and carded another at the ninth for an outward nine of five under. The 34-year-old ninth year LET player added birdies at the 11th, 17th and 18th holes, but bogeyed the 14th and 16th.
“My head is not straight at the moment because I’m full of cold but to have eight birdies and two bogeys for a six under is great,” said Simpson, from Cleckheaton in Yorkshire. Commenting on her tap-in birdie at the 11th she added: “It was unfortunate because another half a roll and it would have been in.”
Laing was delighted with her 66, which included four birdies in a row from the 18th to the third hole.
“I putted really well today. I had a lot of chances at birdie and I happened to make quite a lot of them, almost all of them, so that was pretty exciting,” said the 29-year-old second-year LET player from Musselburgh. “It’s kind of nice to get on a birdie run again. I’d forgotten how much fun it was.”
Six players finished two strokes back in a share of fourth place at four under par. They were Australian Frances Bondad, Austrian Nicole Gergely, Anne-Lise Caudal of France, Germany’s Caroline Masson, Beth Allen of the United States and South African Stacy Lee Bregman.

Two new caps in England senior women's team

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
The England senior women's team for this season’s major international events includes two new caps.
They are English senior champion Caroline Marron of Cheshire and Surrey’s Felicity Christine. They will join five established players: senior stroke-play champion Roz Adams of Surrey, Jo Ashmore of Norfolk, Sue Dye of Cheshire, Janet Melville of Nottinghamshire and Chris Quinn of Hampshire.
They will play in the  European senior ladies’ team championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin, from August 31 to September 4 and the Senior Home Internationals at Sheringham, Norfolk, from September 28-30.
England senior captain Sue Westall is delighted with her team. “This is a fantastically strong team and a really good mix of new and experienced players,” she said.
Roz Adams has just won the English senior stroke-play championship and is well known as a strong contender in senior events.
Jo Ashmore qualified for the match-play stages of the English senior championship, despite needing knee surgery. Four weeks after the operation she came fifth in the senior stroke-play.
Felicity Christine is always in the mix in senior tournaments and this year was a semi-finalist in the senior championship and took sixth place at the stroke-play.
Sue Dye is a past holder of both English senior championships and has been within a whisker of winning the British senior title, losing only in a play-off.
Caroline Marron was the 2001 English stroke-play champion and joined senior ranks last season. She won the English senior championship in April at Littlestone.
Janet Melville won the British championship in her youth and has continued her distinguished career into senior ranks. She is a past senior stroke-play champion.
Chris Quinn is one of the biggest names in English senior golf, having won one British and four English titles.

Manchester rookie's great round on US Futures Tour

Rachel Connor goes for it ... and shoots 61 (-9)

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
DECATUR, Illinois: One day after a flash flood soaked Hickory Point Golf Club, a storm of a different sort tore through the course for a 9-under-par opening round of 61 at the $125,000 Tate and Lyle Players Championship.
That storm was rookie Rachel Connor, who recorded nine-hole scores of 29-32 to tie the tournament’s nine-hole record of 29, set by former LPGA superstar Lorena Ochoa (in 2002) and retired LPGA and Duramed FUTURES Tour veteran Marilyn Lovander (in 1990). The nine-hole records all were recorded when the course was played as a par 70, due to flooding.
Connor’s 18-hole total also shattered the previous record of 7-under 65, shared by four players, including current LPGA Tour members Lindsey Wright (2004) and Jean Reynolds (2009).
“I really wanted to break 60,” said Connor, 19, better known as “Chill” to her friends and family. “If my family is still awake [back home in England], they’re going to think the Tour’s real-time scoring is wrong when they look at my score.”
But Connor’s score was anything but wrong. The lively Manchester native posted 10 birdies, one bogey, hit 15 greens and needed only 24 putts for her career-low round today. Her previous low round was 67, which left the David Leadbetter Academy student nearly giddy with excitement.
“I’ve been having a tough time with my game, missing the cut in the last two tournaments, so my coach told me to go for everything,” she said. “That’s what I did today. I wanted to see what I could do if I went for every pin.”
Firing at flagsticks was a lot easier for Connor today, who was playing in the first group of the afternoon round. That’s because the Decatur area received 1.5 inches of rain on Tuesday, causing the creek that bisects the Hickory Point course to spill over and flood after areas upstream received up to five inches of rain.
The swollen creek morphed into a lake, making nearly half of the course unplayable in Wednesday’s pro-am. But even though the flood waters receded by Thursday’s opening round, soggy fairways and leftover mud forced tournament officials to adjust the par-72 course to a par 70, turning the par-five sixth hole into a par three.
Two other rookie pros, Chelsea Curtis of Seabury, Mass., and Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., both climbed the leaderboard today with matching rounds of 5-under 65 to move into a share of second, four shots back.
Esther Choe of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Elisa Serramia of Barcelona, Spain jockeyed into a tie for fourth at 4-under 66.
Curtis, a recent graduate of Georgetown University, hit 17 greens in regulation for her career-low score. Both Curtis and Shin each carded five birdies in their respective bogey-free rounds.
“I hit the ball close to the flags and gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities,” said Curtis, who played the front nine at four under and with one birdie and all pars on the back. “Some of these holes were under water yesterday and now it’s mostly gone. The course dried out really well after all of that rain.”
Posting her best round as a pro, Shin, 17, hit 16 greens in regulation and said she needed the early boost she received when she rolled in a 40-foot birdie and a 10-foot birdie on holes 10 and 11 – her first two holes of the round.
“That got me going and made me believe my putting was working today,” said Shin, the 2006 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship winner over Tour alumna Vicky Hurst. “I never lost confidence in this round. Let’s just say that I’m not afraid any more.”
A total of 38 players posted rounds in the 60s, with 60 players carding rounds of even-par 70 or better on the 6,219-yard water-adjusted course.
Weather: Mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid-80s, with a slight breeze.

Stephanie Meadow finishes joint 10th in Rolex Girls Junior event

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina — Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., overcame a two-stroke deficit Thursday to triumph at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship, her second consecutive win at an American Junior Golf Association Invitational. The leader of the first two rounds, Ariya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand, grabbed second place, shooting a tournament total of 3-under-par 210.
The Rolex Girls Junior Championship was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the AJGA at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The tournament field featured 76 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, Japan, Argentina, Colombia, Thailand, Mexico, Northern Ireland and Venezuela. The field played the par-71 course at 6,229 yards.
Feng, who won the Thunderbird International Junior just over two weeks ago, fought a close battle with Jutanugarn all week. The two were tied after the first round, each shooting a 3-under-par 68. Following the second round, Feng fell to second, carding a 1-under-par 70, which put her two strokes behind Jutanugarn. However, Feng hit her stride Thursday, sinking three birdies and recording a bogey-free day to card a tournament total of 7-under-par 206. She cited consistency as the key to her recent success, as well as staying calm after big wins.
“Before, when I was really young, I would get really hyper after winning one,” Feng said. “This time my parents are keeping me grounded and golf technique wise, I am more consistent than before.”
While Jutanugarn had a tough third round, carding a 3-over-par 74 after scoring 68s in the first two rounds, Feng aimed to stay focused throughout the day regardless of what her competitor was doing.
“I can only control what I do so I was just trying to play my best and see what happens,” Feng said.
Kyung Kim of Chandler, Ariz., placed third with an even-par 213. Ginger Howard of Bradenton, Fla., took fourth, scoring a 1-over-par 214. California residents Alison Lee of Valencia and Nicole Zhang of La Quinta shared fifth place at 2-over-par 215.
Stephanie Meadow from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, a reserve to the GB and I team for last week's Curtis Cup match against the United States, finished joint 10th on 218 with scores of 73, 73 and 72.
