BEREAVED KELSEY FLIES HOME EARLY FROM FLORIDA
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald has had to withdraw from this week's Orange Blossom Tour golf event at Fort Lauderdale, Florida and fly home to Nairn because of the death of a close friend with bowel cancer - 22-year-old Neil Howitt.
"It's a very sad time for Kelsey," said Lesley Mackay, the Stirling University women's golf coach who is with the students in Florida.
Kelsey's mother June told Kirkwoodgolf:
"Kelsey saw Neil just before leaving for the States and knew he wasn't good but wouldn't have made the trip if she (or anyone) had realised how little time he had left.
"Neil had been a part of Kelsey's life since she was young. Neil and his
twin brother Michael were Nairn Dunbar members and came down and played most days during the summer holidays and after school, meeting up with Kelsey and (her twin brother) Craig. They all became great friends on and off the course.
"Neil competed in many of the under 16, under 18 and youths Scottish
golf competitions, and was a member of North District boys' teams.
"Kelsey is absolutely devastated, as we all are."
The funeral service will be held at St Ninian's Church, Nairn at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday).
