LEONA MAGUIRE EIGHT SHOTS CLEAR, LAURA MURRAY MISSES CUT
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Sixteen-year-old Curtis Cup player Leona Maguire is outstripping the field with her relentless sub-par golf in the Portuguese international women's amateur championship over the Aroeira No 1 course near Lisbon.
The Slieve Russell player is now eight shots clear of the field with a 10-under-par tally of 206 for the first 54 holes.
Her rounds so far, against a par of 72 on a tree-lined course playing long due to rain, have been 66, 70 and 70.
Leona, starting at the first hole, had bogeys at the second and ninth - unusual for her - but she birdied four holes in a row from the short fourth to be out in two-under 34. Coming home, she reeled off nine straight pars.
Over the three rounds Leona has had 13 birdies.
Her twin sister and Curtis Cup team-mate Lisa is the next best placed British or Irish player. She is in joint ninth place on 220 with scores of 71, 76 and 73.
Lisa bogeyed the short fourth but birdied the fifth and long seventh to be out in 35. She birdied the 12th on her way home but ran up a double bogey 6 at the 13th and also bogeyed the long 15th in 38 home.
Over her first 54 holes, Lisa has had seven birdies and two double bogeys.
England's Jess Willox is the third best British and Irish player in joint 16th place on 224, with scores of 73, 75 and 75.
To beat the cut and ensure a piece of the Sunday action in the final round, players had to score 232 or better for the three rounds.
Laura Murray from Alford, the St Rule Trophy winner of 2010 from Alford and the only Scot in the field, missed the cut by a long way. She had rounds of 85, 81 and 86 for 252 and was joint 69th in the completed list of 54-hole aggregates.
Laura was obviously well below her best with 11 double bogeys in 54 holes and only three birdies. She started at the 10th today and after bogeying the 11th, she had double bogey 6s at the 12th and the 13th and a double bogey 5 at the short 14th befeore bogeying the 17th for a nightmare first nine holes that cost her 44 shots.
Laura got her only birdie of the day - she had one each round - at the 11th but then had two more double bogeys, at the fourth and sixth, dropping single shots at the fifth, eighth and ninth in 42 for her second nine.
Germany's Ann-Kathrin Lindner, who had been lying joint seventh at halfway after a pair of 73s for 146, was disqualified for having 15 clubs - one too many - in her bag during the third round.
