LEONA MAGUIRE (66) SETS PACE IN PORTUGUESE WOMEN'S AMATEUR
St Rule Trophy winner Laura Murray from Alford made a disastrous start to the 81st Portuguese international women's amateur championship over the Aroeira No 1 course near Lisbon today.
Laura was lying joint 69th after a first-round, 13-over-par 85 over the tree-lined course.
That put her 19 shots behind the pacemaker, Curtis Cup 16-year-old Irish twin Leon Maguire who took full advantage of the good scoring conditions - only a light breeze - shot a six-under-par 66.
Laura, the only Scot in the field, had spent last week warming up at Desert Springs Golf Resort in Murcia, Spain for this the start of the elite women's amateur golf calendar.
She started badly with a double bogey 7 at the long first but bounced back with a birdie at the second. That was as good as it got for the Scotland international who is a member of Paul Lawrie's Foundation team.
Laura bogeyed the fifth, sixth and seventh to turn in four-over-par 40.
She then bogeyed the long 10th and the par-4 11th before running up double bogeys at both the par-4 12th and the par-3 14th. Sandwiched between them was a bogey 4 at the 13th. Bogeys at the 17th and 18th gave her an inward half of nine-over-par 45.
Leona Maguire began at the 10th and covered her first nine holes in four-under-par 32 with birdies at the long 10th, 11th, 13th and 16th. She got to seven under par with birdies at the long first, short fourth and par-4 sixth before dropping her only shot of the day at the seventh for 34 home and a brilliant round of 66.
Her twin sister Lisa had a 71 with birdies at the first, sixth and 12th, and bogeys at the short eighth and short 14th in halves of 35 and 36. There will be a cut after the third round to the leading 40 and ties who will play the final round on Sunday.
