WEST ESSEX WIN JUNIOR TEAM HOME NATIONS TITLE IN SPAIN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Two girls from England training squads helped West Essex to victory in the Junior Team Golf Inter-Club Home Nations Championship in Spain.
West Essex were representing England and their winning team included Sophie Madden and Ashleigh Greenham, who are both members of English Women’s Golf Association squads.
They both won all their medal match-play games and helped their team to a 3-0 clean sweep during the three-day series at the El Valle Golf Resort at Polaris World in Murcia.
West Essex played their closest match on the first day when they beat Scotland – represented by Liberton – by 3½-2½. But after that they didn’t lose a game. On the second day they beat Wales (Wrexham) 6-0 before defeating Ireland (Athenry) 5-1 in a title showdown, winning four games and halving two.
Sophie, 14, is a member of EWGA’s Select South East Squad and was runner-up in the English U13 championship and won the Essex schools title. Ashleigh, 14, trains with the Super Birdies South East Squad, and is the holder of the East region and Essex U15 girls’ championships.
The other West Essex team members were: Jon Cristey, Chris Moore, Jack Heasman, Mitchell Wellington, Hugh Campbell and Bobby Keeble.

The Home Nations Championship involves about 1300 clubs across the UK and about 13,000 junior boys and girls. West Essex played a number of preliminary rounds before beating 13 other teams to claim the England title in the national final at the MacDonald Portal Hotel in Cheshire.
