ISOBEL MACKAY HONORARY MEMBER OF LADIES PANMURE BARRY

Club captain Mary Anderson (on left) and Isobel Mackay at the Ladies Panmure Golf Club, Barry annual general meeting at which Isobel was made an honorary member.

Miss Isobel Mackay was made an honorary member of Ladies Panmure Golf Club, Barry at their Annual General Meeting.
Born in the clubhouse in 1928, Miss Mackay continued to live there until her father retired as steward in 1948. During her time she remembers golfing visits by the then Duke of York (to become King George VI) while he was wooing his future bride, Elizabeth of Glamis.
Trips in the royal Rolls Royce would be taken while the golfers were on the course - to 'buy sweeties' was the reason for the trips.
During the war the clubhouse was commandeered by the Army as a billet and the practice ground was turned into a vegetable plot. Chickens were also kept. Miss Mackay joined the club in 1951, since when she has been a loyal member and friend to many.
A keen golfer, she managed to play frequently, both on her home course and in the county competitions while still a working lady. Miss Mackay took up the mantle of Match Secretary 21 years ago, a post she held until the recent annual meeting.
It was with much pleasure that the captain, Mrs Mary Anderson, on behalf of all the members, offered Miss Mackay honorary membership of the club. She is only the third lady to be given this honour. An engraved bowl was presented to mark the occasion.
