Walker Cup team candidate for the September match at Royal Aberdeen, James Byrne had a nightmare round of eight-over-par 80 to round off his first US college circuit tournament of the year - the Amer Ari Invitational over the Waikoloa Kings Course on Hawaii.
The Arizona State University final-year student from Banchory, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had earlier had rounds of 74 and 70 over the 7074yd, par-72 course. He finished joint 86th on 224, 21 shots behind the trio on 203 who played off for the title.
Later Byrne, ranked the 18th best amateur golfer in the World, explained what went wrong:
"I played 10 holes with 15 clubs and incurred a four-stroke penalty. To be honest, my game is a touch rusty after a full month off. I did have a couple weeks to practise before this tournament but I was far from 100% in Hawaii. I played OK for the most part, but had something like six "others" (bad holes) which was simply down to lack of competitive sharpness and lack of focus.
"I played 25 holes bogey-free with eight birdies in the middle of the tournament but the doubles/triples either side of that stretch killed me. I am very disappointed to have scored so poorly but remain confident of turning in some good performances over the next few months."
Good luck, James! We want to see you in action over the Balgownie links in September.
