MATT TWEDDELL MAKES TOP 50 IN JOHN BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE

Matt Tweddell (Hawaii Pacific University) from Birmingham, grandson of Dr William Tweddell who won the British amateur championship in 1927 and lost in the 1935 final, finished joint 46th in a field of 94 at the John Burns Intercollegiate tournament at Turtle Bay Resort, Wahiawa, Hawaii.
Matt, pictured by courtesy of Tom Ward Photography, had rounds of 74, 76 and 72 for a total of 222 over the two par-72 courses in use (7,198 and 6,712yd).
Team-mate Matthew de Moraes from London finished joint 75th on 230 with scores of 77, 77 and 76.
There was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard on 206, featuring Max Homa (California) 68, 69 and 69; John Hurley (Texas A and M) 69, 70 and 67, and Ben Kohles (Virginia) 71, 68 and 67.
Kohles won the individual title play-off with a birdie at the second extra hole.
California scored his third team victory of the season with a total of 834. Texas A and M (840) were second and New Mexico (846) third. Hawaii Pacific (896) finished 15th in a field of 17 teams.
+Dr William (Bill) Tweddell, a graduate of Aberdeen University, also was playing captain of the GB and Ireland team in the 1928 Walker Cup match. He was captain but not a player in the 1936 match against the States. Tweddell played John Taylor in the 1927 exhibition match which opened the Hazlehead municipal course at Aberdeen.
