PEPPERELL (76) BEST OF BRITS, IRISH IN JONES CUP FIRST ROUND

The Scottish Golf Union did not enter any of its top players for this weekend's Jones Cup invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club, Sea Island, Georgia. In view of the scores achieved by the England, Ireland and Wales representatives in today's first round, that decision was perhaps not such a bad idea.
England's Eddie Pepperell did best of the British and Irish with a four-over-par 76 - six shots behind the three-stroke leader, American Jack Fields.
Oliver Farr (Wales) had a 78 and compatriot Rhys Enoch an 81.
Kevin Phelan (Ireland), who is a US college student, had an 82, one shot better than England's Andrew Cooley and the Welsh pair Rhys Pugh and Alastair Jones.
All in all, scores that will be viewed the SGU Elite Squad, currently enjoying an eight-week break in South Africa, with a general "glad we're not there" feeling.
Most of the contenders for places in the United States team for September's Walker Cup match at Royal Aberdeen are in the field of 89.
