SALLY WATSON JOINT FOURTH FINISH IN HOME-COURSE EVENT
Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson, a sophomore (second year) student at Stanford University, California, chalked up her first top-10 finish of the second half of the US women's college golf season over her home course yesterday.
Sally had rounds of 75 and 72 for a five-over-par total of 147 over the par-71 Stanford University to finish joint fourth in a field of 70 for the Peg Barnard Invitational college tournament.
Formerly from South Queensferry - the Watson family home is now at Elie in Fife - Sally finished seven shots behind the three-stroke winner, Emily Childs (California) who scored 73 and 67. Team-mate Daniela Holmqvist was runner-up on 143 with scores of 69 and 74.
California's 1-2 ensured that they would end Stanford's three-year reign as team title winners at the "Peg Barnard," which they did with a total of 579 - 18 shots ahead of runners-up Stanford with UC Davis - whose women's team head coach is Anne Walker from Strathaven - third on 599 in a field of 10 teams.
Sally Watson steadied the ship in her second round, reeling off 17 pars and just one bogey, at the 16th. In contrast her first round had been a roller-coaster ride of three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey 6 at the sixth.
MAXWELL SHARES 5th PLACE IN NEW MEXICO
Steven Maxwell, pictured right, from Glasgow, a student at Western New Mexico University, and Jordan McColl from Dundee, a student at New Mexico Junior College, both made the top 10/ll in a field of 23 at the New Mexico Collegiate Cup which ended today at Sierra Del Rio Golf Club, New Mexico.
