Graeme McDowell goes back to see his old Birmingham (Alabama) team

By IAN THOMPSON
Staff golf writer of the Birmingham (Alabama) News.
Graeme McDowell's recent visit to Birmingham, Alabama to spend time with the University of Alabama-Birmingham men's golf team was supposed to be under the radar, and it would have been had McDowell not chosen to tweet about his visit to the city of his alma mater.
No harm done as he did some media interviews at the Country Club of Birmingham and then did a clinic for the golf team before venturing on the course.
It had been some years since I'd seen McDowell in person, but his personality hasn't changed at all. He's still friendly, articulate and a genuine person who visited his former team to impart some of the knowledge that has helped him rise to No. 5 in the world.
The day before he had played golf at Shoal Creek with the current Blazers squad without distraction and then had "a few beers" with former teammates Daniel Ozley, Chad Goodwin, Payton Osborn, Adam Seale and Daniel Fontaine. Garrett Osborn, Payton's younger brother and teammate of both Payton and McDowell, joined McDowell for golf on the Thursday.
"It means a lot to come up here (from his home in Orlando) and share some of my experiences with the guys," McDowell said. "They are a young team and I've wanted to visit for a while, but I've been kind of busy the last year," he said, smiling.
Indeed, four worldwide wins (Wales Open, U.S. Open, Andalucia Valderrama Masters and Tiger Woods' Chevron World Challenge), plus such a pivotal role for Europe in the Ryder Cup, have seen him rocket up the world rankings.
I remember well the McDowell, who played for UAB from 1999 to 2002, winning nine college events. He reached college golf's pinnacle by being named the recipient of the Haskins Award in 2002 for national Player of the Year. He then won in just his fourth event on the European Tour and was on his way in the professional ranks (he now has eight wins across the globe).
He plans to play most of his golf this year on the US PGA Tour, with upcoming starts in this week's Cadillac Championship (Doral), Arnold Palmer Invitational (Bay Hill), The Masters, and Zurich Classic of New Orleans taking him through to early May.
His visit to Birmingham, Alabama came in the midst of a much-needed month-long rest from tournament golf.
"I feel reasonably recharged and I'm looking forward to the season," he said.
But his visit wasn't about his game, it was to help the future of the program that helped him excel in golf.
"He wasn't that strong of a player his freshman year, but he really blossomed," Alan Kaufman, the longtime UAB coach, said in the understatement of the day.
His visit really had an effect on UAB redshirt junior Jason Shufflebotham, who hails from Wales and made it to the semi-finals of the 2007 British Amateur. McDowell is a native of Northern Ireland.
"I struggled my freshman year and Graeme told me he did, too. He was great to play with. ... Just a regular bloke. He gave us so much help and advice."
Last words from McDowell:
"My three years at UAB were a big turning point in my career. I certainly grew as a person, both physically and mentally. Coach Kaufman had enough belief in me to bring me out here (on a golf scholarship from Northern Ireland). I travelled to every tournament in my three years here and developed as a player.
"My experiences here and the tournaments I played here and the great golf courses we have access to around Birmingham (Alabama) really got me ready for the pro ranks."
