KENILWORTH JUNIOR MASTERS, WARWICKSHIRE ON APRIL 20
Kenilworth Golf Club in Warwickshire will host the third Kenilworth Junior Masters on Wednesday, April 20. This event, sponsored by the Golf Society of Great Britain, is one of a series of six competitions held annually at leading venues across the country which are designed to give young golfers the chance to enjoy competitive golf.
The Golf Society of Great Britain have been supporting junior golf through their sponsorship of the Junior Masters series since 1994 and over the years many notable players have taken part in these events. From the current England squad, Chris Lloyd, of the Kendleshire won the Moortown Masters in 2002 and went on to enjoy an illustrious junior career which saw him win the Daily Telegraph Abu Dhabi Junior Championship in 2009.
However, the amateur golfer with the most impressive performance by some margin in the Junior Masters series of events is current England ‘A’ Squad member, Jonathan Bell. Finishing runner up at Bath in 2001, aged just 9, it was evident that Jonathan was going to be a force to be reckoned with. He proved his pedigree by winning no less than three Junior Masters titles in 2003 with further titles following in 2004 and 2005.
Many of the former competitors in this series have gone on the join the professional ranks including current European Tour players such as Chris Woods and Oliver Fisher who both won Junior Masters titles. The 2010 English Amateur Champion, Tommy Fleetwood, who has also joined the professional ranks, finished runner-up at Moortown Masters in 2002.
Continuing the tradition, last year’s Kenilworth Junior Masters attracted talented young golfers from all across the country with the field including three EGU regional development squad members. It was one of these, Josh Thorley from Derbyshire, who went on the claim the title in 2010 with an excellent gross score of 72.
A unique feature of this series is the range of players taking part.
All events are open to boys and girls, aged under 14 on the day of the competition, regardless of their ability or experience. Those without an official handicap will be awarded one based on their age.
Entry forms can be downloaded from the club’s website or they are available from the club secretary on 01926 858517.
