ROOKIE LAURA FIRST-ROUND LEADER AS FUTURES TOUR TEES OFF
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LPGA FUTURES TOUR
WINTER HAVEN, Florida: Rookie Laura Nochta admitted to a nervous start in her first round of her first season on the LPGA Futures Tour. But by the end of today’s opening round of the $110,000 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, the recent Indiana University grad held a one-shot lead at 5-under 67.
“I was so nervous on the first tee, but I had no expectations,” said Nochta, 23, of Cortland, Ohio. “I had to remind myself that this was the same course I played yesterday, that it hasn’t changed since yesterday and that I know how to play it.”
Indeed she did. The rookie produced a bogey-free round that included three birdies, 15 greens in regulation and an eagle-2 on the par-four 14th hole that featured a holed-out wedge from 105 yards.
Tied for second in the season opener at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club were former LPGA Tour members Cathryn Bristow of Auckland, New Zealand and Leah Wigger of Louisville, Kentucky, both at 4-under 68.
Bristow rolled in birdies on two of her first four holes and hit eight of nine greens in regulation on her first nine holes. But the New Zealander was forced to scramble when she made the turn to the front nine, hitting only three greens and carding two birdies and a bogey.
A 2008 tournament winner on the Futures Tour and a two-year LPGA Tour member, Wigger birdied three of her first six holes and added a final birdie on the 18th hole in her bogey-free round. She credited solid ball striking today and 17 greens in regulation for moving her up the leaderboard.
“After LPGA Q-school last year, it was a blow to my ego to lose my card, but the more I thought about it, coming here was a chance to regain some confidence and learn to relax a little more,” said Wigger. “I was nervous today, but the results worked out and I’m very happy.”
Five players are tied for fourth at 3-under 69. In that group are Jennifer Johnson of Carlsbad, Calif., Jackie Barenborg of Vero Beach, Calif., Tzu-Chi Lin of Taichung, Taiwan, Tiffany Joh of San Diego and Amelia Lewis of Jacksonville, Florida
Eight players are tied for ninth at 2-under 70.
A total of 25 players carded rounds under par today with 43 players finishing at even-par 72 or better.
