JODI EWART MAKES TOP TEN IN LPGA FUTURES TOUR OPENER
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LPGA FUTURES TOUR
HAVEN, Florida: There will be a Facebook message waiting for LPGA superstar Yani Tseng sometime this evening from LPGA Futures Tour member Tzu-Chi (“Winny”) Lin.
Lin, who played as an amateur on the same Chinese Taipei National Team with the world’s top-ranked player, will keep it simple and to the point.
“I’ll tell her I did it,” said Lin, 20, of Taichung, Taiwan. “I’ll tell her I won my first professional tournament.”
Lin closed out today’s final round to win the $110,000 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic at 10-under 206, posting rounds of 69-68-69 in the Futures Tour’s season opener at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club.
But she did it by outlasting local favorite Jackie Barenborg (70) of Vero Beach, Florida, with a birdie on the final hole. The former Florida Southern College player held the lead for most of the front nine while Lin recorded one bogey and all pars. Lin trailed by two strokes when they made the nine-hole turn.
“That’s when I started singing,” said Lin. “I knew I had to relax. And I knew I could make more birdies because there are three par 5s on the back.”
When Barenborg bogeyed No. 10, and Chin birdied the par-five 11th hole, the player from Taiwan moved into a tie with Barenborg and Ashley Bunch (71) of Morristown, Tennessee, at seven under. But Bunch fell back, finishing in a tie for eighth at 5-under 211.
Both Barenborg and Lin birdied the 12th and 13th holes to move into a tie for the lead at nine under with five holes remaining. Lin added her fourth consecutive birdie on the 14th hole to take a one-stroke edge over Barenborg, but dropped back into a tie when she bogeyed the 15th and the scrappy Floridian holed out from the woods for birdie from 95 yards.
Playing a group ahead, Tiffany Joh (69) of San Diego was making a late charge, with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. The 2010 Futures Tour tournament winner had an eagle chance from 33 feet on the 18th green for a share of the lead, but Joh could only tap in a three-foot birdie on the 18th to take sole possession of third place at 8-under 208.
That left only the duel between Lin and Barenborg coming into the par-five 18th green that is bordered on the front by water and a bunker on the back. Lin had birdied the final hole in each of the previous two rounds, so she knew she had to give it one more try.
“I had to make birdie on 18 to have a chance to win,” said Lin, a third-year pro. “I knew I had to try.”
The player from Taiwan had 182 yards to the flagstick, so she pulled her 4-hybrid and landed her second shot 30 feet from the hole to set up an eagle putt. Barenborg laid up and then watched her 9-iron approach land 20 feet from the hole. Two putts later, Barenborg took par.
And Lin’s eagle putt slid four feet past the hole, setting up her birdie to win.
“I was nervous on that last putt,” said Lin, who used 27 putts today and earned $15,400 for her win. “I took a big breath and watched the ball go straight into the hole. It was done. It felt so good.”
And with that stroke, Lin joined her old pal from Taiwan junior golf at the top of women’s golf in North America.
Weather: Thirty-minute fog delay in the morning, turning sunny with temperatures in the high-80s. Winds 5-12 mph, with gusts in the afternoon.
+BRIT WATCH. Former Curtis Cup player, Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire, finished joint 10th and earned $1,787.
