MAGUIRE TWINS THROUGH TO LAST EIGHT IN SPAIN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Sixteen-year-old twins Leona and Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell), pictured right, are into the quarter-finals of the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez, Cadiz.

Seventeenth of the 32 match-play qualifiers, Lisa continued her strong run of form, dispatching Spain's Luna Sobron Galmes on the 13th green in the afternoon's second round.
Galmes had earlier defeated the leading qualifier, France's Ines Lescudier, while, also in the opening round of match-play, Lisa had to go to the third extra hole to dispose of Curtis Cup team-mate Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down Ladies).
Third qualifier Leona beat British girls' open champion Alexandra Bonetti from Paris on the 18th green. It was sweet revenge for the Cavan teenager who had lost the deciding match to Bonetti in the 2010 European girls team championships that saw Ireland having to settle for silver medals.
The Maguire twins are in opposite halves of the draw so they could meet in the final.

Leona, pictured left, now faces another French star, Emilie Alonso, in Saturday morning's quarter-finals while Lisa plays England’s Holly Clyburn, also a member of the GB and I 2010 Curtis Cup team, for a place in the last four.
The semi-finals will be played on Saturday afternoon with the 18-hole final scheduled to be played on Sunday morning.
