TEAM SCOTTISH HYDRO WILL INCLUDE TWO GIRLS NEXT YEAR
FROM THE SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY WEBSITE
By John HugganThe first thing that needs to be said is that Team Scottish Hydro is a terrific idea. Identifying and helping five up-and-coming Caledonian golfers with the ever-increasing costs involved in making their respective ways on the European Challenge Tour is a long overdue initiative, one that should be nurtured and encouraged.
The second thing, however, is that the question asked in this column one week ago by former Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew - "why no ladies?" - was both an obvious and perfectly legitimate reaction to the news that the all-male quintet of Gavin Dear, Chris Doak, Craig Lee, Callum Macaulay and Jamie McLeary are to be the first beneficiaries of the scheme during 2011.
Happily, amicable, productive and hopefully on-going communication took place this past week between Matthew and Iain Stoddart of Bounce Sports Marketing, the Edinburgh-based management company that first devised and now runs the scheme.
"Catriona's view is 100 per cent valid and completely fair," acknowledges Stoddart. "It was actually a surprise to us that it took this long for someone to raise her point. But we aren't overlooking the ladies; they are very much in our thoughts for next year.
"Scottish Hydro feels the same way and I can say now that two girls - in addition to five men - will definitely be receiving our support in 2012."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Full marks to Catriona Matthew for sticking up for equal rights for women golfers ... Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk was on its own in highlighting and criticising the lack of a female face in the Team Scottish Hydro line-up the day the announcement was made.
