Tom Berry (San Diego State University) from Surrey and Scots-born professional's son Andrew Gunson (University of California-Santa Barbara) from Irvine, Ayrshire finished in the top 20 of the Barona Collegiate Cup men's college tournament at Barona Creek Golf Club, Lakeside, California this past week.
Berry finished sixth in a field of 100 with steady scores of 70, 73 and 72 for a one-over-par total of 215 over a long (7,324yd) par-72 course.
Tom finished six shots behind the winner, one of Andrew Gunson's team-mates, Glen Scher (University of California-Santa Barbara) who shot 70, 67 and 72 for seven-under 209.
Gunson, pictured left, who has been educated since high school days in California after his father moved there to become head pro at Shady Canyon Golf Club, had rounds of 73, 74 and 74 for 221 and finished joint 28th. They provide a long distance link between Irvine, Ayrshire and Irvine, California - the nearest big town to Shady Canyon Golf Club.
Not surprisingly, Andrew's ambition is to become a golf pro when his university days are over.
Alan Glynn from Middlesex, a student at Xavier University, Cincinnati, finished joint 92nd on 241 with scores of 81, 79 and 81.
Tom Berry's noble effort helped San Diego State (1079) win the team title ahead of great rivals San Diego University (1086) with UC-Santa Barbara (1119) finishing sixth of 16 teams.
