TOP SCOTLAND JUNIORS ON SUNDAY PARADE AT THE DUKE'S
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Scotland’s leading junior golfers will line up at The Duke’s, St Andrews on Sunday as the 2011 domestic amateur season gets underway with the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions.
Now in its in fourth year, the event brings together the winners of the previous season’s junior champions, both male and female, from across Scotland’s national, area and county championships, with 62 players taking part.
Defending his junior boys’ title will be Torwoodlee’s Simon Fairburn, pictured right, winner of the Lothians boys' championship for the past two seasons, who finished fourth in the 2010 SGU boys' order of merit, while Renfrewshire’s Alyson McKechin, pictured below, will be aiming for a repeat for her girls' title success from 12 months ago.
Scottish Under-18s champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) will start among the favourites in the boys’ event, a month ahead of the defence of his national title at Dunbar, with Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, winner of the national Under-14s championships in both Scotland and England last year, looking to add to his recent trophy haul.
Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County), the leading junior in last year’s Scottish men's amateur championship at Gullane, will be looking to get his season off to a flying start after finishing runner-up in last year’s SGU boys' order of merit while 2009 Scottish boys' stroke-play champion Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), now an Applied Maths student at Stirling University, is aiming for another national title in his final year as a junior.
The girls’ field is headed by reigning Scottish girls' champion Lesley Atkins (Minto) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), who picked up the 2010 SLGA girls' order of merit title at the recent XOS Scottish Golf Awards. Rachel Watton (Mortonhall), a member of the victorious Scottish team at last summer’s women's home internationals, will be another name to watch.
Euan Mordaunt, SGU Events Manager, is looking forward to the start of the new playing season:
“The Scottish Junior Champion of Champions is a great way to get our new season underway. The players have put in a lot of hard work over the winter, many through our Academy programme, and will be eager to get their competitive game up and running.”
“The Duke’s will be a tough test of golf but the course is in good condition for the time of year and I’m sure we’ll see some good golf on display. This is the event’s fourth year and we’ve had some good past winners, including Carly Booth who has since progressed to the professional ranks.” he added.
