GLASGOW'S GAVIN HAY PIPPED IN US COLLEGE PLAY-OFF
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Glasgow's Gavin Hay, a sophomore (second-year) student at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City in Tennessee, was pipped in a play-off for victory in the Richard Rendleman Invitational men's college tournament over the Country Club of Salisbury, North Carolina's par-71, 6,665yd course.
Gavin, pictured right, made almost all the running with scores of 68 and 71 for a three-under-par final total of 139 but he was caught by Jordan Walor (University of North Carolina-Pembroke) who had rounds of 69 and 70.
Hay bogeyed the first extra hole in the sudden-death play-off with Walor's par figure being good enough for me to take the title.
Second-top finisher among the eight British/Irish students in the field of 90 players was Peter Tarver Jones (Belmont Abbey College, Charlotte, North Carolina) from Worthing. Peter, already a winner on the circuit, finished joint fourth on 142 with a pair of 71s.
Next came Scott Lambert, a member of Matfen Hall Golf Club, Northumberland.
Scott is a student at UNC-Pembroke and his rounds of 74-73 for 147 helped them win the team title with a total of 581 - six shots ahead of Belmont Abbey College.
Jamie Chapman (Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Tennessee) finished joint 14th on 148 with two scores of 74. Jamie hails from Sussex.
Liam Ashby from Dublin, a student at Carson-Newman, scored 75-74 for 149, just making the top 20 in joint 19th position.
Luke Butler (Lincoln Memorial) from Worcster shared 31st place on 151 with scores of 76 and 75.
Adam Hedges (Belmont Abbey College) scored 80 and 76 for joint 51st place on 156.
Matthew Killen (Newberry College, South Carolina) finished joint 59th on 158 with rounds of 80 and 78.
Harking back to the team event, the leading final placings in the field of 17 teams were:
581 UNC-Pembroke.
587 Belmont Abbey.
589 Queens University.
594 Lincoln Memorial and Newberry College.
