ELAINE AND CHARLOTTE BARROW WIN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS
By Jo Thesiger
Elaine and Charlotte Barrow, from Brokenhurst Manor in Hampshire succeeded in adding their names to the distinguished list of winners of the Mothers and Daughters, 27-holes stroke-play foursomes, at Royal Mid Surrey on Saturday.
Charlotte Barrow, aged 14, a five-handicap, follows closely in the footsteps of England International, Alexandra Peters, from Notts Ladies, winner of the event for the past three years with her mother, Ann. Alex was also only fourteen when the pair claimed their first victory in 2008. Unfortunately the Peters were unable to defend their title this year but that left the field wide open for an exciting contest.
With Royal Mid Surrey bathed in sunshine and covered in blossom, the Barrows started with a spring in their step making an excellent birdie at the first hole. Elaine, the Hampshire junior organiser, praised her youthful daughters “amazing putting” which led to back-to-back birdies on the long par 4, 14th and par 3, 15th holes on their way to an outstanding morning round of four-over-par, 75.
Former Curtis Cup player, Jill Thornhill and daughter, Caroline Weeks, from Walton Heath, winners in 1987 and 2002, were delighted to be back in contention lying two shots adrift on 77 after the morning eighteen. While another Walton Heath pair, Christine and Charlotte Griffith, the lowest handicaps in the field, lay a further shot behind on 78.
Thornhill and Weeks continued to play superbly in the afternoon until disaster struck on the 6th hole. The tiny, fiddly, par 3 with a narrow green surrounded by bunkers, spoiler of many a card, was to be the downfall the experienced pair. After missing the green from the tee, they scored a disappointing double bogey five which proved to be critical. Despite missing out on the scratch prize by a frustrating two shots, their score was still good enough to take the 27-hole handicap trophy.
Although, 11-year-old, Martha Lewis from St George’s Hill and her mother Evelyn were unable to regain the handicap trophy after success last year, they still scored a fantastic aggregate scratch score of 129. While it was a real achievement for Morag Broom to also finish on 129 with her mother, Mary Morrison, as she did so sporting an enormous bump, six weeks away from giving birth to perhaps a future partner!
As the wind picked up in the afternoon, seventeen-year-old Charlotte Griffiths, a three handicap and her mother, Christine, rallied nearly catching the leaders by finishing with a brilliant birdie. They returned an impressive two-over-par, 37, over the remaining nine holes but it wasn’t quite good enough missing out by a single shot.
With such a competitive field, Elaine Barrows was brimming with delight at winning for the first time with her daughter, Charlotte. However the Mothers and Daughters does present a small dilemma for her each year, as she actually has another, five-handicap, daughter and although she will be back next year to defend the title, it will be with her elder daughter, sixteen-year-old, Laura!
