LANARKSHIRE CHAMPION FIONA NORRIS FAILS IN HAT-TRICK BID
Hamilton's Fiona Norris - sister of LPGA Tour player Mhairi McKay - has failed in her bid to win the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship three years in a row.
The No 3 seed, Fiona was beaten in the quarter-finals today in this year's championship at Strathaven Golf Club by Fiona Scott (Bothwell Castle), the No 6 seed, by 3 and 2. Last year Fiona Scott went out in the first round.
Fiona Norris, pictured, bogeyed three holes in a row from the sixth to be three down at the turn and then lost the 10th to a birdie. Norris
won back the 14th but her rally ran out of holes.
In the Friday morning semi-finals, Scott will play 10th qualifier Angela Devine (Hamilton) who won her quarter-final at the 22nd against the No 2 seed, Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), winner of the title in 1997 and beaten finalist six times, including last year.
Lloyd, two down after 16 holes, won the 17th and 18th to go back up the first. Lesley bowed out at the 22nd with a bogey.
Top seed and debutante Rachael Taylor, Airdrie-born but based in Germany where her father is a club pro, played very well all day, chalking up a pair of 5 and 4 wins. She now plays No 12 qualifier May Hughes (Lanark) for a place in the final.
Hughes, champion in 1993, 2003 and 2004, won by 2 and 1 against No 4 seed Susan Wood (Drumpellier).
Hughes was twice three up against a battling Wood.
