LANCASHIRE LASS BROGAN WINS THE LEVER
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Lancashire’s Brogan Townend made a quick start to the 2011 season with a five-shot win in the first big scratch event of the year, The Leveret at Formby Ladies.
The 16-year-old from Pleasington set the pace in the first round and moved away from the field in the afternoon, returning a six-under par score for the day with a pair of 68s.
Brogan had a bogey-free round in the morning and in the afternoon dropped just two shots over the front nine. Altogether she had eight birdies in the 36 holes.
Her closest challenger on a cold, blustery day was Rachael Goodall of Cheshire, who in turn was a shot ahead of Gloucestershire’s Shelby Smart and Yorkshire’s Emma Brown.
Brogan, who trains with EWGA’s U18 squad, won another top scratch event last year when she was successful in the Pleasington Putter. She was the 2009 Faldo Series U16 champion and last season was the Lancashire girls’ champion and the Northern girls’ U16 titleholder.
