FIONA DE VRIES BREAKS ANKLE AT WORLD CURLING IN AMERICA
One of Scotland's leading senior lady golfers, St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries broke an ankle on the ice at the 2011 World Senior Curling Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota last week.
Fiona was playing the Scottish lead in the match against Ireland when she tripped at the edge of the sheet, fell heavily and fractured her ankle.
Reports from America indicate that Fiona is now recovering after an operation to pin together her broken bones. She had to stay in hospital for about 10 days which means she won't get out until the end of this week.
Her husband is making arrangements to go out to the States and stay with her as the teams fly home tomorrow. The members of the US ladies' team are going to make sure Fiona is not lonely and are setting up a rota for visiting the hospital and have offered accommodation for her husband when he arrives.
Fiona was the 2006 Scottish Veteran Ladies Champion and is current Scottish senior international.
It is very unlikely that she will be back on her feet and playing golf regularly by the time the Scottish senior women's championship is held at Portpatrick Dunskey from June 28 to July 1.
