LANCOME IRISH WOMEN'S CLOSE CHAMPIONSHIP - CARLOW G C
Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush)
defeats holder Mary Dowling
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
On a day of horrendous weather Carlow’s Karen Delaney made steady progress in the Lancôme Championship, defeating Ariana Coyle Diez (Elm Park) in their second round match.
Karen will take on Deirdre Smith (Co Louth), who herself won the Championship in The Island in 2004.
Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush), pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, caused the upset of the day in beating reigning champion Mary Dowling. On paper the match was likely to be a tight encounter and it was, but Charlene had a two-hole advantage at the turn and held on to win on the 17th green.
Danielle McVeigh has progressed steadily all week. Coming from Newcastle, Co Down, she is certainly used to windy conditions and crushed Louise Coffey by winning the first four holes.
In conditions where it was hard to judge club selection Danielle got it spot and earned a well deserved quarter final berth against Louise Mernagh. Louise, despite being four down after four, edged out Chloe Ryan, this time Chloe losing out on the first tie hole.
Aedin Murphy once again kept Carlow hopes of the title very much alive, in a match against another favourite on paper, Gillian O’Leary. There was a never more than a hole in it. Aedin eagled the 16th to go ahead and then had a super chip and putt on 17 to remain one up. She held out to win the match on the home green.
Eileen Rose Power's experience, course management and putting in tough conditions earned her a fine 6 and 5 win and a quarter final against Aedin Murphy.
