NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SLGA
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) will face a new challenge when she bids to retain the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship over the renowned Machrihanish course next week (Tuesday to Saturday).
Victory in the Championship at Craigielaw in East Lothian last year marked the start of a super summer for MacDonald. She went on to reach the final of the British Amateur, retained the Scottish Under-21 Open Stroke Play title and won the SLGA’s Order of Merit.
She also helped Scotland win the Home International title and she is joined in the 89-strong field by six of her team-mates from the side that claimed the crown in Wales last September. The only absentee is Curtis Cup player, Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell), who is sitting one of her final exams for a Business and Management degree at Glasgow University.
But the list does include last year’s beaten finalist, Louise Kenney, and the 2009 Champion at Southerness, Megan Briggs.
“Winning the Scottish last year was a real highlight and it set me up for the rest of the season,” said the 20-year-old Stirling University student. “I know it is not going to be easy, but I would love to win it again.”
“I have never played Machrihanish but I have heard so many great things about it and I am looking forward to defending the Championship over a quality course.“
In addition to MacDonald and Briggs, the field includes three other former winners in Alison Davidson (1997), Elaine Moffat (1998) and the winner from 2006, Martine Pow.
This is the tenth time that Machrihanish has staged the Scottish Ladies’ Championship. The most recent occasion was in 2000 when Lynn Kenny, now a successful member of the Ladies’ European Tour, beat Heather Stirling in the final.
