STEPHANIE MEADOW LEADS NCAA EAST REGIONAL BY TWO
FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA WEBSITE
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The third-ranked Alabama women's golf team shot a 4-under-par 284 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional on the par-72, 6,271-yard Legends Course at LPGA International on Friday to take a four-stroke lead heading into Saturday's final round.
The top-seeded Crimson Tide answered a push from No. 21 North Carolina, who moved into second place with a 6-under-par round of 282 on Friday for a 1-under total of 575. Alabama shot 7-under par over the final seven holes of the second round to take a three-shot lead over the Tar Heels at 5-under 571.
"We got going at the end of the round and finally made some birdies," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said of Friday's second round. "We were just having kind of an okay round, and with the play of North Carolina we slipped into second place for awhile, but we made some birdies coming in to finish strong."
Freshman Stephanie Meadow vaulted to the top of the leader board by making four birdies on the final seven holes to take a four-shot lead on the individual leader board at 6-under 138 after 36 holes. The native of Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, carded birdies on three, four, five and eight to go along with birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 and a bogey on No. 1 to post a 67.
"Stephanie (Meadow) just knows how to win golf tournaments," Potter said. "She isn't the longest off the tee, but she hits pretty much every fairway and really controls the distance on her irons. When she is making putts, like she did today, she is going to post a low number."
Sophomore Jennifer Kirby also made a strong push with three straight birdies to close her round on holes seven, eight and nine. She finished with a 2-over 74, but stood at 5-over 15 holes. Kirby is tied for 24th individually at 3-over 147 along with freshman Hannah Collier, who shot 75 Friday.
Senior Camilla Lennarth continued her stellar play with a 1-under-par round of 71 on Friday to move into a fourth-place tie at 1-under 143. She carded four birdies and three bogeys on the day to move into the top 10.
The top eight finishers at the NCAA East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at the Traditions Club on May 18-21 in Bryan, Texas.
In the team race, Purdue is tied for third at 4-over 580 after a 3-under-par 285 in round two, joining Arizona State, who also shot 285 Friday. Coastal Carolina is in fifth place at 8-over 584. California is (+10, 586) sixth, Florida State (+16, 592) seventh and Florida (+19, 595) eighth after 36 holes. Michigan State and Mississippi are tied for ninth place, just off the cut line at 20-over 596.
