The Continent of Europe team won the Vagliano Trophy today for the third time in a row in the biennial women's amateur international golf match over two days at Royal Porthcawl's windswept links in South Wales .
They made light of the bad weather – a very strong, cool wind and intermittent rain – to beat Great Britain and Ireland 15 ½-8 ½.
It was the biggest margin win achieved by the Continent of Europe in the history of the event which was first played in 1959.
Great Britain and Ireland's previous lowest points total was in 2007 at Fairmont St Andrews where the Continent of Europe won 15-9.
The only GB and I winners in the eight second-day singles were Scotland's Pamela Pretswell and Ireland's 16 year old twin Leona Maguire.
The Continent of Europe also won the inaugural Under-16 girls' match by 13pt to five.
"I'm disappointed that we lost because I always hate losing whether as an individual or as part of a team," said captain Tegwen Matthews (Wenvoe Castle) who played in four Curtis Cup and four Vagliano Trophy matches when she was at her peak as a player in the 1970s.
"It was a lot closer than the final scoreline suggests. Four or five of the Saturday matches went to the 18th green and we won only one of them," she said.
"A lot of very good golf was played over the two days and I don't think there was much between the two teams. The difference I think was that they holed more long putts than we did. Not much between them with regard to the shorter putts.
"I don't think the GB and I team were tired after winning the Astor Trophy tournament the previous weekend."
The Under-16s match has been officially named the Junior Vagliano Trophy and there will be a trophy for that match when the LGU v European Golf Association double-header is next played - in 2013 at Chantilly, France.
