HAMPSHIRE'S CHRIS QUINN LEADS ENGLISH SENIOR STROKE-PLAY

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Past winner Chris Quinn bounced back from an “awful” start to play the last 10 holes in two-under par and take the first-round lead in the English senior strokeplay championship at Saltford Golf Club, Somerset.
Chris, a senior international from Hockley in Hampshire, was five-over par after eight holes before she transformed her fortunes to shoot three-over 76.
She is two shots clear of a group which includes another past winner, Janet Melville of Nottinghamshire, and fellow international Caroline Marron of Cheshire. With them are Andrea Stockdale, also from Nottinghamshire, and Ruth Lindley of Durham, who are both winners on the senior circuit.
Local players Bev New – the British senior champion – and Val McFarlane, who both play at Lansdown, are a further shot back. They share sixth place with Pat West of Lincolnshire and another senior international, Felicity Christine of Surrey.
Many players found the course challenging, despite a recent, softening downpour and an easing of the wind to pleasant, breezy conditions.
But Chris Quinn felt the strong winds of the past few weeks were to blame for her loss of form over the opening holes.
“I think it’s just playing so much in the wind. I couldn’t even get it going on the practice ground, I felt as though I’d never stood in front of a golf ball and I was awful to start with. I was thinking ‘How do I get the club back?’” she said.
The turning point came after she double-bogeyed the long eighth – and then snacked on half a sandwich on the next tee. “Suddenly I felt much more like me and played the rest of the course in two under par.”
Chris didn’t drop another shot and, as well as scoring two birdies, she was extremely satisfied with her play on two demanding par fours. “The 13th and the 16th are very, very good par fours and if you take a five you’re not disappointed.”
She birdied the 248-yard 15th, which she drove with a three wood and two putted, and finished with a textbook birdie on the 322-yard 18th, where she played a half pitching wedge to within 6ft of the hole.
“I was very pleased, she said. “You could say I’m a lot happier than I might have been!”
Chris, who has been British senior champion and won both the English senior titles, previously won this event in 2009. The 2010 champion, Roz Adams of Surrey, shot 83 and shares 18th place with a group which includes another senior international and past winner, Sue Dye of Cheshire.
After Wednesday's second round the top half of the field, and ties, will qualify for the final 18 holes on Thursday.
