IT'S CHRIS THE MIGHTY QUINN IN ENGLISH SENIOR STROKE-PLAY

Hampshire’s Chris Quinn was the runaway winner of the English senior strokeplay championship at Saltford, Somerset, finishing seven shots clear of the field.
The senior international led the championship from start to finish and extended her advantage after every round: from two shots after 18 holes, to six after 36 and finally to seven. She signed off with a two-over par 75 for a three-over total for the 54-hole event.
The battle for second place was won by Cheshire’s Caroline Marron, who finished three shots ahead of Somerset’s Bev New, the British senior champion.
Chris, from Hockley, also teamed up with Elaine Barrow of Brokenhurst Manor to win the county team trophy for Hampshire. Former England captain Sue Westall of Copt Heath successfully retained the over-65 trophy.
Chris Quinn has dominated English senior golf over the past six years, winning the closed amateur championship three times, the strokeplay title twice now and the British title once. She remarked: “It’s lovely to come back and do it again, especially as you move towards the end of the 50s, rather than the start! It’s always fantastic to win a championship.”
She’s no stranger to being a frontrunner, having also held a six-shot lead going into the final round of the British, when she won in 2006.
Today, she reached the turn in level par, after two birdies and two bogeys on the outward half. Her playing partner, former English senior champion Caroline Marron, had dropped two shots at the turn and, after a careful look at the halfway board, Chris couldn’t detect any unexpected challenges.
“I played the back nine quite defensively, I was hitting greens in regulation and just trying to nudge it up to the hole. Once I got through the 16th it was a case of telling myself to just keep the ball in play. It’s a different mental attitude to when you think you need to attack.”
Meanwhile, Caroline finished with a 76 and Bev New moved up into third place with her closing 75, which equalled the best of the day. Somerset’s other representative – and also from Lansdown – was Val McFarlane, who finished 12th.
Lulu Housman of Middlesex maintained her good form to take fourth place, ahead of three senior internationals, Janet Melville, defending champion Roz Adams and Felicity Christine.
