JAMES BYRNE ENDS US COLLEGE GOLF CAREER ON LOW NOTE
James Byrne's four years at Arizona State University and competing on the US men's college golf circuit ended on a low note in the climax to the season - the NCAA men's Division 1 championships at Karsten Creek, Stillwater in Oklahoma.
The world-ranked Banchory student signed off with a round of five-over-par 77, running up a double bogey 6 at his second last hole, and finishing joint 50th in a field of 156 with a 54-hole aggregate of eight-over-par 224.
Arizona State did not finish their season in a blaze of glory. Byrne was their second-best scorer and the squad of five did not even come close to figuring among the eight teams who now go on to the match-play stages.
John Peterson (Louisiana State), who set a course record of seven-under-par 65 in the second round, had the lowest three-round total of five-under-par 211. His three rounds over a very difficult and long course (7,414yd) were 74, 65 and 72. Peterson's effort was not enough to lift LSU into the match-play and, like Byrne, the tournament is also over for him.
The NCAA championships are all about the teams and Arizona's total of 899 was 10 shots more than the team that claimed the last of the eight match-play spots - Duke University.
