PATIENT EKEY LEADS LPGA FUTURES TOUR EVENT AT IOWA
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LPGA FUTURE TOUR
MARION, Iowa, June 4, 2011 – First-round leader Kathleen Ekey was patient all day, carding 17 consecutive pars and waiting for a birdie that finally came on her 18th hole of the $110,000 Ladies Titan Tire Challenge.
“My day was kind of boring,” said Ekey, who carded a one-under 71 in Saturday’s second round to build a five-stroke lead at 6-under 138 heading into Sunday’s final 18 holes.
“I knew I was playing well, but it’s hard to stay patient for that long,” added the second-year pro of Sharon Township, Ohio.
After two rounds at Hunters Ridge Golf Course, Ekey is trailed by Jane Rah (68) of Torrance, California, Carling Coffing (69) of Middletown, Ohio, and Leanne Bowditch (70) of Queensland, Australia, all tied for second at one-under 143.
On a calm day that was vastly different from Friday’s opening wind-blown test, players had a chance to regroup and make a run at the lead. But while she hit 15 greens and all but two fairways in regulation, Ekey’s birdie chances were never less than eight feet. She had two lip-out birdie putts and was forced to save par three times.
“You just have to stick to your process and play as well as you can, even if the putts aren’t dropping,” said Ekey.
Rah struggled with her distance control in Friday’s windy first round and was able to dial in her shots today in calm conditions. The Californian said she was “five for five” in chipping in today’s second round.
“Yesterday was just ridiculous,” said Rah, 20, a second-year pro who recorded 25 putts today. “For me, it’s all about if I can get up and down for par.”
Rah needed some Iowa farm equipment to get out of the tall fescue on No. 6, where she was forced to take an unplayable lie after an errant tee shot. But the former Oklahoma State University Cowgirl drained birdie putts from 30 feet on No. 8, from five feet on No. 9, and then added birdies on holes 11, 12 and 15 from 10, five and two feet, respectively.
Coffing also scrambled today, hitting only nine greens in regulation, but carding 24 putts on a day that featured four birdies and one bogey. She had three tap-in birdies and chipped in from 30 feet on No. 15.
“My short game was on fire today and I had some fabulous saves,” said Coffing, who won the Golf Channel’s “Big Break Sandals Resort” show last year. “I made mistakes, but I recovered well.”
Like Ekey, second-year pro Bowditch spent the day waiting for birdie putts to drop. Finally, on her 13th hole, the former Pepperdine University player drained a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 4, and added a second birdie from eight feet on the fifth hole. She carded 16 pars.
“Today was a very boring and frustrating day that required a whole lot of patience,” said Bowditch, who hit 15 greens in regulation. “I left everything about two inches short. Where you place your ball on the green has a lot to do with how you play out here.”
Rookie Jean Chua of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia carded her second even-par score of 72 to move into fifth place alone at even-par 144.
Sunday’s final round of the third annual Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Iowa’s Greater Cedar Rapids area will begin at 7:50 a.m., off the first and 10th tees. The leaders will tee off the first tee at 9:40 a.m.
