Robert Gordon’s College and Torry Academy will contest next Monday’s Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ Golf Championship at Craibstone Golf Club.
In tonight’s semi-finals, held at Auchmill Golf Club, defending champions Robert Gordon’s College beat Aberdeen Grammar School 2½-½ whilst Torry Academy were surprising 2-1 winners over St Machar Academy.
Torry, playing with only five players due to a late withdrawal because of illness, found that the match result hinged on the performance of their last player, Ross Brady. With St Machar edging through one up in the first match, thanks to Chris Polson’s 30ft birdie on 17 and the Torry second pairing winning 2 and 1, it set up a nervy last few holes for Ross. However, Ross was up to the task and to the delight of his team mates beat his two opponents, Aiden Page and Chelsie Angelo, 2 and 1.
In the second match, the Robert Gordon’s first pairing of Craig Lawrie and David Young found themselves dormie standing on the 17th tee. However, their Grammar opponents, Cameron Johnstone and Anthony Harkins, battled back to level the match with pars on 17 (from Cameron) and 18 (from Anthony).
The second tie was all square standing on the 16th tee, but back-to-back birdies from Gordon’s Alex Taylor ensured a 2 and 1 victory.
In the final tie, Grammar’s Cameron Robb and Scott McKendrick found themselves five down as Curtis Stephen and Harry Chatfield reached the turn in a combined score of one over. However, the Grammar pairing fought back, winning the 10th, 13th and 16th holes before finally succumbing on the, difficult par 3, 17th.
Match Results:
St Machar Academy 1 Torry Academy 2
C Polson and Andy MacKenzie bt Z Wood and S Bennett 1 hole.
D Smith and Adam MacKenzie lost to T Ogston and R Gray 2 and 1
A Page and C Angelo lost to R Brady 2 and 1
Aberdeen Grammar School ½ Robert Gordon’s College 2½
C Johnstone and A Harkins halved with C Lawrie and D Young
G Kinnear and; C Howe lost to A Taylor and F McPherson 2 and 1
C Robb and S McKendrick lost to C Stephen and H Chatfield 3 and 1
