TORRY ACADEMY WIN ABERDEEN SCHOOLS TITLE
By DEREK JOHNSTONE
Torry Academy claimed the Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ League Trophy for the first time since winning the inaugural competition in 1999. Their young side beat the defending champions, Robert Gordon’s College 3-0 in blustery conditions at Craibstone Golf Club.
Captain, Stephen Bennett partnered by Zac Wood set the foundation to the victory with a 5 & 3 win over Craig Lawrie and David Young. The Torry pairing soon found themselves 4 holes up, as they warmed to the well-prepared course. A birdie 2 at the second and a chip in eagle at the fourth from Zac were followed by back-to-back threes through five (a net eagle) and six (a par) from Stephen. Their advantage was extended to five when Stephen holed from 8 feet for birdie on ten. The Gordon’s pairing battled hard and reduced the leeway when David secured birdie on the 14th. Their joy was short-lived and a conceded birdie at the following hole gave victory to their opponents.
A Torry victory was assured when their third pairing of Nicole Yeats and Ross Brady fought back from a four hole deficit at the turn to beat Alex Taylor and Harry Chatfield 3 & 1. On the outward nine, the Gordon’s pairing were never extended as they won the first, seventh, eighth and ninth holes to par. The par three, 10th however, was to be the turning point in the tie. With neither Torry player on the putting surface and Alex’s tee shot sitting within three feet, the Torry pairing were praying for divine intervention. It duly arrived when Nicole’s pitch landed in the hole for a winning net one. Taking inspiration from this, the Torry duo went on to win five of the next seven holes finishing the match on the 17th green.
In the second tie, the Torry pairing of Tyler Ogston and Ryan Gray got off to a flyer winning five of the first six holes. However their dogged opponents, Alex Taylor and Harry Chatfield, chipped away at their advantage and eventually levelled the tie on fifteen. A par (from Alex) at the next put them momentarily in the lead but the Torry lads were not going to be denied and back-to back net birdies secured a hard fought one hole victory.
Match Result:
Torry Academy 3 Robert Gordon’s College 0
S Bennett & Z Wood beat C Lawrie & D Young 5 & 3
T Ogston & R Gray beat F McPherson & J Manson 1 hole
N Yeats & R Brady beat A Taylor & H Chatfield 3 & 1
