FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITE
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Alexis Thompson of Florida extended her lead to seven shots after Thursday's third round at the first stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament.
Thompson, 16, carded her third consecutive score of 6-under-par 66 today to move to 18-under 198. She leads fellow teen Ginger Howard of Bradenton, Fla., who posted a score of 4-under 68 and is in second place at 11-under 205.
“Her tee ball is good and she’s putting herself in great position,” said father/caddie Scott Thompson, who is serving as his daughter’s spokesman until after Friday’s final round. “She hit wedges into every green today except on one hole and on the par-3s.”
Thompson was bogey-free today with six birdies. She hit every green in regulation and hit two of the par-5s in two shots on LPGA International’s Champions Course. In three days, the teen has recorded one bogey in her march toward medalist honors in this week’s first stage of qualifying.
“Her confidence level is getting good again,” added Scott Thompson.
Former Daytona State College standout Mitsuki Katahira (72) of Kawasaki City, Japan is in third place at 9-under 207, followed by UCLA senior Stephanie Kono (72) of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Katahira, ranked No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, started her round with a double bogey on the first hole when her tee shot found the left water hazard. The junior college star added two birdies to finish the day at even par.
Nearly half the field returned to LPGA International Thursday morning to complete the second round, which was suspended Wednesday evening due to dangerous weather. The second round was completed at 9:56 a.m., with 72 players making the 36-hole cut at 4-over-par 148.
Thursday's third round play began at 11 a.m., with the leaders teeing off at 1:01 p.m., but play was suspended for dangerous weather at 11:59 a.m., resuming at 1:32 p.m.
Friday’s final round will start at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. The leaders will tee off at 9:20 a.m. Friday off the first tee of the Champions Course at LPGA International.
The first stage of the 2011 LPGA Qualifying Tournament includes players who are not members of any recognized Rolex Ranked women’s golf tour or who are not ranked in the top-100 of the Rolex Rankings as of July 12, 2011.
The top-50 and ties on Friday will advance into the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament, to be held Sept. 27-30, at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.
The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes and held Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive LPGA Futures Tour status.
