CANADA LEAD EURO JUNIOR GOLF CUP IN FIFE
St. Andrews – Constant rain played havoc yesterday at the second round of the Euro Junior Golf Cup at Balbirnie Park Golf Club.
Canada continued its strong play and now leads the United States by six points while Scotland gained two points on the day and trails in third.
Canada started the day with a heated match between Emily Romkey, 16, of Fall River, NS and Christina Paulsen of Team USA. Romkey led the match most of the day but failed to close out the American on hole 18 ending the match all squared. Bria Jansen, 14, of Calgary, AB collected her first point of the tournament with a 5 & 4 victory over Elexa Dikats of the United States.
In the Boys 15-19 division Jérôme Gosselin, 17, Ste-Thérèse, QC only needed thirteen holes to collect his two points for Canada. “My strategy today was simple, play conservative and minimize my mistakes” said Gosselin. JP Holliday, 16, of Calgary, continued to provide Canada valuable points late into the day after winning both of his matches on the 17th hole.
In the Boys 14 and Under division, Logan Yanick, 14, of Courtnay, BC once again claimed victory in both of his matches and now has three and a half points for the tournament. Brett Pasula, 14, of Red Deer also contributed to Canada’s day total with two points of his own. The Boys 14 and Under have played particular well for Canada this week, losing only four out of sixteen matches in the two days.
Kyle Wicks, 18, of Chatham, Ont. continued to provide his teammates with some excitement. Wicks who lost the 16th hole by fault of a penalty found himself leading his match by one going into the 17th hole. Remaining calm, Wicks chip in for birdie to seal the match and the last point of the day for Canada.
“It was a challenging day for all of the competitors with poor weather conditions and a difficult golf course. We were pretty fortunate to be able to add to our lead considering we were the only team that hadn't seen this golf course before” said Non Playing Captain for CJGA Team Canada, Sean Casey. “The team played well and their patience paid off. They're a great bunch of juniors and we're all looking forward to tomorrow's final round at Drumoig.”
Final round matches will continue today (FRIDAY) at Drumoig Golf Club starting at 1:00pm. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
