ENGLAND GIRLS HAVE TO SETTLE FOR SILVER MEDALS
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England’s brave bid for gold in the European girls’ team championship at Is Molas, Sardinia, ended in disappointment on the 20th hole of the last game when France won the intensely close final 4-3.
Although England had to settle for the silver medal the players won the unstinting praise of national junior coach Pat Smillie. “The quality of the golf has been phenomenal today, in 90 degree temperatures.
“The girls should be absolutely bursting with pride. Their golf this week has been outstanding and I have seen some of the best putting from an England team in a long time.
“We were top qualifiers for the matchplay, Emily Taylor had the best 36-hole strokeplay score, Bronte Law shot the low score in qualifying with 66 – and they came within a whisker of the gold medal. And, five of the six team members will still be available as girls for next year’s Europeans.”
The final was extremely tight throughout. The two foursomes points were shared, before Georgia Hall won her singles on the last hole while British champion Lauren Taylor claimed her point on the 20th. With two other singles going to the French, the outcome of the match rested on Bronte Law’s game.
The standard of play over the closing stages of this match was remarkable: Bronte birdied the 15th to go one up; her opponent birdied the 16th to get back to all square. Bronte birdied the 17th to be one up with one to play; her opponent had a winning birdie on the 18th.
The 19th was halved in birdies before the French girl won her point and the title with yet another birdie on the 20th.
“We would all like the colour of the medal to be different but the girls have all worked their socks off this week and they were fantastic, absolutely fantastic,” said Pat.
She had particular praise for the way they managed the hot conditions. “Their fitness levels have been impressive, they have been very disciplined about our strategy to keep them hydrated and rested and that’s why they could perform at such a level on the last afternoon.”
The full team, captained by Julie Sparrow, was: Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry), Georgia Hall (Remedy Oak), Bronte Law (Bramhall), Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies’), Emily Taylor (Royal Lytham and St Annes), Lauren Taylor (Woburn).
Spain beat Germany 5½ -1½ to win the bronze medal.

England beat France at European ladies’ team championship
England finished the European Ladies’ Team Championship on a high when they beat France 3½-1½ on the final day.
It meant the team finished in fifth place, which was the highest they could achieve after losing their first matchplay tie in the quarter finals and dropping out of the hunt for medals. Team captain Lynn Booth said: “This was a very good result and everyone is very pleased. It’s one place better than last year and as long as we can keep going upwards that’s what matters.
“We got in front early on and stayed there, we were just confident and we didn’t have any wobbles.”
The championship was won by Sweden who beat Spain 5-2. Germany won the bronze medal, beating Belgium 4-3 in a very tight tie in which one game went to the 21st and another to the 22nd.
