HAYLEY DAVIS LEADS ENGLISH GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP by THREE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
International Hayley Davis holds a three-shot lead with two rounds to play in the English girls’ championship at Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire.
The 18-year-old from Dorset is level par after 36 holes, after adding a second round of two-over 74 to her opening 70. She leads the qualifiers for tomorrow’s final 36 holes and is three clear of Elizabeth Stebbings of Lancashire and a further stroke ahead of Cheshire’s Bronte Law.
Hayley’s score was a fighting result after she dropped four shots in the first six holes. “It was all right after that!” remarked the 2010 English women’s champion. She came back with three birdies on the eighth, ninth and 11th which helped her to complete the remainder of the round in two-under.
Many of the girls found the greens challenging but, despite that, there were a number of very creditable returns, especially when compared to the Scratch Score for the lengthened course of 75, three above the par.
The greens certainly held no fears for Ellesborough member Evie Ing who is relishing playing a major event on her home course and is making the most of local knowledge. She returned a one-over par 73 today and shares 10th place, comfortably exceeding her goal of simply making the cut.
“It’s really good playing at home,” she said. “There are lots of members around who are really supportive and the greens are really nice – but local knowledge is helpful, knowing where to be and where not to be.”
Evie had four birdies in the first 10 holes, including one on the sixth where she holed a pitching wedge from 100 yards. But the tough inward half, featuring long par fours, cost her some bogeys.
Elizabeth Stebbings, Olivia Winning of Yorkshire, Georgia Hall of Dorset and Jerri Sewell of Kent also returned one-over 73 to improve on their opening scores and strengthen their positions on the leaderboard. Meanwhile Bronte Law returned her second 74 which included an eagle three on the eighth.
Defending champion Elizabeth Mallett of Warwickshire slipped back a little with a second round 77, but shares fourth place and is firmly in the mix.
The low round of the day was a level par 72 from Emma Newlove of Nottinghamshire, who shared 17th place. She had four birdies on the outward half and reached the turn at three-under par.
The top 40 players and ties qualified for tomorrow’s final 36 holes. The cut fell at plus-18 and 43 players went through.
