HAYLEY DAVIS WINS ENGLISH GIRLS TITLE BY EIGHT STROKES
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Dorset’s Hayley Davis shot a stunning six-under par 66 to win the English girls’ championship by eight shots at Ellesborough in Buckinghamshire. Her final round included back-to-back eagles and she signed it off with a real crowd-pleaser, rolling an impressive putt into the hole on the 18th for a last birdie. It gave her a 72-hole total of three-under par and a clear victory in an event she led from start to finish.
The runner-up was Yorkshire’s Sophie Godley who played the final round in two-under 70 and moved up the leaderboard, ahead of Georgia Hall of Dorset and Cheshire’s Bronte Law who tied for third place.
This was Hayley’s last chance to win the title before she leaves junior ranks and her win completes a double, following her success in last year’s English women’s amateur championship.
It’s also one of her last events before she leaves for the USA later this month to take up a scholarship at Baylor University, Texas. She’ll play in just the Girls’ Home Internationals next week and the British girls’ championship before flying out.
Hayley, an England international from Ferndown, led the championship from start to finish. She was two clear after the first round, three ahead at the halfway stage and, as this morning’s third round got underway, she got to two-under after 11 holes and appeared to be cruising. But she dropped five shots in the last five holes and returned a 75, which left her three-over for the event and with her lead cut to just one shot.
Georgia Hall (Remedy Oak) made her move with a two-under 70 while Bronte Law (Bramhall) returned level par 72. Just two shots further back on six over were defending champion Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies) and Olivia Winning (Rotherham). Sophie Godley (Lindrick) was another shot behind on seven-over.
“Everyone was playing well in the morning and they were getting closer – but I knew if I played good I had a good chance. I just wanted to try and do my best – and it was good enough.”
In the final round, Hayley dropped a shot on the second hole, where she three-putted, but she got that back with a birdie on the fifth. Then her round really kick-started with back-to-back eagles on the eighth and ninth, where she chipped in.
Her best stroke of the day was on the par four 12th, where her eight-iron approach finished within a foot of the hole, but her golf throughout the round was simply superb. She had one more bogey, on the par three 14th hole - which cost her a shot in every round – but she came straight back with a birdie on the 15th and then rolled in another on the last.
“It was one of my best-ever rounds,” said Hayley. “The course is tough but I only missed one green. I played really good
Meanwhile, Sophie Godley moved into second place with a fine closing 70, which included six birdies. Georgia Hall and Bronte Law tied third after they both scored 75 in the last round, as did Olivia Winning who finished fifth.

Sammy wins English U13 championship by six shots
Twelve-year-old Sammy Fuller sped away from the field to win the English girls’ U13 championship by six shots at Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.
It was a sweet result for the three-handicapper, from Roehampton in Surrey, who came determined to win – and to wipe out the memories of last year’s event.
Twelve months ago she shared the lead with 18 holes to play, but was beaten over the final round and then lost second place on countback.
After she signed for a two-over 74 and a winning total of four-over par 220 for 54 holes, Sammy said: “I’m really pleased, especially after what happened last year.”
She went on: “I definitely wanted to win and I was up for it today. I just knew that if I played my game and kept focussed then it would be hard to beat me.”
This year, with one round to play, Sammy held a one-shot lead over Annabel Bailey of Notts’ Ladies and she gradually extended it as they played.
She birdied the second and although she then had a bogey and a double – where she went in the water – her reply was another birdie on the sixth. After that she parred in, with the exception of one bogey on the back nine.
“This is my biggest win so far and I think it will give me confidence in the next few competitions ahead of me,” said Sammy, who was recently runner-up in EWGA’s South region women’s championship.
Annabel Bailey, 12, returned a final round score of 79 and took second place, four shots clear of Lucy Walton of Worcestershire.

Gabriella Cowley wins English U15 girls’ championship
Essex golfer Gabriella Cowley won the English U15 girls’ championship by two shots with a three-under par total for 72 holes at Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.
Her victory means she’s met her season’s goals of a top three finish in the championship and a handicap of scratch. “I’m very happy,” said Gabriella.
The 15-year-old from West Essex signed off with a level par 72 in a final round which was marked by low scores.
Buckinghamshire girls’ champion Annabel Dimmock carded a closing four-under 68 to snatch second place, while her Wentworth club colleague Inci Mehmet returned 69 and finished third.
Earlier in the day Alice Hewson, who was last year’s U13 champion, also had a 68 in the third round.
Gabriella came into this championship in fine form, having just won the Porters Park Centenary Cup, where she shot six under par. She kept up the standard at Mentmore, opening with a one-under par 71, followed by 72, 70 and 72.
Her third round score of two-under par was a remarkable achievement. She was five-over par after seven holes but then hit blistering form with seven birdies and an eagle on the remaining holes – coming home in 30.
With one round to play she held a four shot advantage over Dorset’s Sophie Keech who also had a 70 and moved up from eight place. Sophie carded 73 in the final round and finished fourth.
Gabriella, an Essex ounty player, said afterwards: “I was excited and a little bit nervous at the start of the day, but then I settled down and started playing well.”
