NORTH OF SCOTLAND WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
TAIN'S MARY SMITH EARNS TOP SEEDING Tain senior international Mary Smith was the leading qualifier for the match-plays stages of the North of Scotland women's amateur championship at Nairn Golf Club today. She had a 73 to earn top seed status, two shots ahead of former Scotland junior international and Stirling student Rebecca Wilson (Grange Ladies) with former Angus women's county champion Ann F Ramsay (Kirriemuir) the third leading qualifier with a 76. Former Aberdeenshire Ladies secretary Mary Robinson (Murcar Links) was the leading qualifier for the handicap match-play with a net 70 off 15. Mary Miller (Cruden Bay) was the next best with a net 73 off 14. Reay youngster Eleanor Tunn, who has to make a long journey even to play at Nairn, carded a gross 80 with an 11 on her card on the front nine. Apparently she got in a bunker and couldn't get out without the expending several strokes. Despite this, Eleanor's 80 will reduce her handicap from 5.6 to 5.
