SAMMY FULLER LEADS BY ONE AT ENGLISH U13 GIRLS CH/SHIP
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Sammy Fuller beat par today with a one-under 71 to take a slender one-stroke lead into the final round of the English girls’ U13 championship at Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.
The 12-year-old from Roehampton came off the course and remarked: “I’m definitely looking forward to tomorrow.” She’s two-over par after 36 holes and one shot clear of Annabel Bailey of Nottinghamshire, who is also 12 and scored the low round of the day with her two-under 70.
Both girls were on impressive form. Sammy had a very tidy card with two bogeys and three birdies. But, to her disappointment, her second bogey came on the last hole where she had her only three-putt of the round.
“I’m pleased with my round but I could have done better,” said Sammy, who was joint runner-up last year. However, she was pleased with the quality of her approach shots, notably on the 10th where her pitch to the green finished six inches from the hole.
Annabel Bailey, from Notts Ladies, started more slowly with bogeys on the first two holes, but then hit the form which rewarded her with six birdies throughout the rest of her round.
She was level par to the turn before coming home in two-under, thanks to three birdies and just one bogey.
Sammy and Annabel are well clear of the field. The third-placed player is Lucy Walton of Worcestershire, who has 75 today for a total of 10-over, followed by Victoria Mallett of Warwickshire, who shot 73 for a 14-over total. Behind them is a tightly packed leaderboard.
After today’s round the field was cut to the top 18 players and ties who go forward to contest the last round tomorrow. The cut fell at plus-25 and 20 players qualified.
