SURREY'S SAMMY FULLER LEADS ENGLISH U13 CHAMPIONSIP
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Sammy Fuller shot three-over par 75 and holds a two-shot lead after the first round of the English U13 girls’ championship at Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire’s Annabel Bailey is her closest challenger on five-over, while Kent’s Elizabeth Price is another shot back.
Sammy, aged 12, was joint runner-up in this event last year and came into the competition in great form, having recently finished runner-up in EWGA’s South Region women’s championship.
Her round included four birdies, notably on the holes which she had identified as tough during her three practice rounds.
Ironically, it was the comparatively simple par four sixth which cost her most dearly. Sammy hit a perfect drive and left herself only 90 yards to the green, but her approach shot went over the back, behind a tree and eventually she recorded a triple bogey.
But the three-handicapper refused to let it rattle her, living up to her father’s description of her as a fighter. Her short game and putting stood her in good stead as she played on to compile her score.
Sammy’s sister Annabell is also in the field and is the youngest competitor in the championship at the age of nine. She plays off 19, enjoyed her debut outing and returned a creditable 93.
Annabel Bailey’s family is also out in force. She’s joined in the U13 field by her sister Jessica, who is currently tied 15th, while their older sister Lianna is playing the English U15 girls’ championship, also at Mentmore.
After tomorrow’s second round the field will be cut to the leading 18 players and ties who will contest the final 18 holes on Thursday.
