WOODBRIDGE WIN ENGLISH SCHOOLS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

What a difference a year makes. Last July, the team from Woodbridge School waited in hope at misty Came Down, only to be pipped for the English Schools Team Championship, but in the sunshine of Woodhall Spa this year they emerged victorious - by a whisker.
With the best two cards from three to count, the Suffolk duo of Thomas Case and Montgomery Scowsill finished with 82 Stableford points over the Bracken Course only to tie with the Balby Carr Sports and Science College from Yorkshire. But they took the title on countback, Harrison Carter’s non-counting 33 proving crucial.
Balby Carr’s Nick Poppleton and Lewis Gill each signed for 41 points to tie Woodbridge but the 30 from their third man Andrew Wilkinson left them in second spot.
None of the Woodbridge trio was in last year’s team but they were determined to come out on top this time.
“We wanted to avenge what happened last year,” said Scowsill. “We felt we had a good chance because we’ve all been playing well and we were confident after the practice round.”
The build-up to the event also proved key to their success. “We were well prepared by our coaches Richard Thorley and Ian Saunders,” added Carter, who began his round in a heavy downpour. “I expect the team from last year are going to be a bit jealous but this is a great honour for the school and this is better than any event we’ve won before.”
The Balby Carr team were feeling as Woodbridge did a year ago. With a combined handicap of 16 compared to Woodbridge’s 51, Nick Poppleton and Lewis Gill both returned 41 points off five handicap for gross 72s, fine efforts over a tricky course.
Third were King Henry VIII School from Warwickshire with 80 points, while Ashfield from Nottinghamshire were fifth with 78.
Several girls formed part of teams and the other Suffolk school, Kesgrave High, included Melissa Schroeder who returned the highest female tally with 41 points off a handicap of 11.
Melissa, a member of the Rushmere club, said: “My putting saved me. I holed everything today.”
