YORKSHIRE'S SUE JOHNSON TO BE NEXT EWGA PRESIDENT
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Yorkshire’s Sue Johnson will be the next President of the English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) – and could find herself with a key role in a new era for amateur golf in England.
The proposed merger of the EWGA and the English Golf Union (EGU) will be decided at general meetings in November. If it is approved, Sue will be one of two Presidents-elect of the new, merged organisation which will represent the interests of all English amateur golfers.
The other President-elect would be Paul Baxter, the former chief executive of the EGU, and they would each take up a simultaneous, one-year role as President at the first annual meeting of the new organisation.
If the merger proposal is rejected, Sue will serve a two-year term as EWGA President, starting at the annual meeting in early 2012.
Sue, who has extensive experience of county, national and international golf administration, has been appointed by the EWGA management board, after consultation with the operational board.
Interim chairman Sylvia Perrins commented: “I am delighted that Sue has agreed to be the President-elect for the future organisation. It is important that the new President commands respect among the golfing community and Sue’s background and experience will do exactly that. The next year will be a pivotal time for golf in England and I am sure Sue will be instrumental in playing a leading role in the future organisation.”
Sue is a member of Huddersfield Golf Club and started her career in golf administration in Yorkshire and went on to represent the county on the former English Ladies’ Golf Association (ELGA). She became ELGA chairman in 1987 and then started a six-year term on the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU), which she chaired in 1994.
Sue was LGU president from 2001-03 and has also been captain and president of Yorkshire. She is a life vice-president of both the LGU and Yorkshire.
During her time with the LGU Sue was involved with running both the Commonwealth Tournament, now the Astor Trophy, and the Curtis Cup when it was held at Royal Liverpool
She has been a single figure golfer for most of her life and played for the Yorkshire second team, but says: “I’ve never been a top golfer but I have had such pleasure from the game and met so many wonderful people.”
Sue was introduced to the game by her husband and their eldest son has just finished his term of office as Huddersfield club captain. Their other son and daughter are not golfers.
