NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Essex teenager Sophie Madden shot four-under-par to win the girls’ age 14 division of the US Kids Teen World Championship at Pinehurst, in North Carolina.
Sophie, 14, is a member at West Essex and trains with EWGA’s Select South East squad. She finished five shots clear of her closest rival.
Sophie opened her account in the 54-hole tournament with a one-under par 71 which gave her a two-shot lead over the field. In the second round she carded a level par 72, with two birdies and two bogeys on each half, and remained two ahead.
She saved the best until last with a three-under par 69 which clinched her win. She birdied three of her first six holes and made only one bogey in her round as she extended her lead to five shots.
Her mother, Debbie, reports that the event was played in heat of 106 degrees, with 90 per cent humidity, on a course with very fast greens.
