SCOTLAND LOSE TO IRELAND AND WALES STUN ENGLAND
Scotland's hopes of winning the Girls Home Internationals' Stroyan Cup for the first time in four years all but evaporated under a hot summer sun at the Gullane No 2 links today.
Skipper Karen Marshall's team slid from a 3-2 lead to a 6-3 defeat by Ireland - who did not win a match 12 months ago on home turf at Bangor, near Belfast.
McIlroy, McDowell, Clarke ... now the Irish girls team, even without wonder twins Lisa and Leona Maguire, are on a roll. Where will it all end?
If the Scots failure to repeat last year's 5.5-3.5 win over Ireland was a surprise, then England being held to a 4.5-4.5 draw by Wales - whom they beat 9-0 last year year - bordered on the sensational.
England's girls have won this Under-18 title for the past three years and came to the Lothians venues ready to make short work of the opposition once again.
But it didn't happen, even though England led 2.5 to 0.5 after the foursomes. Chloe Williams, Amy Boulden and Katy Bradbury wiped out the deficit for Wales by winning the top three singles and the Red Dragon's tail wagged with a win by Jessica Evans for Wales to take the singles 4-2 and a earn a creditable drawn.
Scotland trailed 2-1 from the foursomes against Ireland but girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and beaten finalist Gemma Dryburgh from Aberdeen looked to have turned it round by winning the top two singles.
Unfortunately, Scotland then lost the last four singles with Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) all going under.
